Position: Teaching Artists: trumpet, trombone, saxophone (alto and soprano) Location: Chicago, IL

Organization Overview: Music in Urban Schools Inspiring Change (MUSIC Inc.) is an El Sistema inspired program that has been offering tuition-free music instruction to Chicago west side communities since 2011. MUSIC Inc.’s commitment to equity and accessibility in music education is rooted in the principles of our family focused approach. Our program culture is built around trauma-informed instruction and supporting students' social emotional growth as part of their music education. Music teachers serve as mentors, helping students set goals, create a strong at home practice routine, curating your instruction to best support each individual student’s needs.

Job Summary: MUSIC Inc. is seeking experienced teaching artist on trumpet, trombone, and saxophone to work with beginner students at UCAN youth resident facility. Students are ages 14-18 and for many this is their first exposure to instrumental music. Students will be taught in small groups of 4-6 students per group with a goal of bringing students together in a brass band ensemble by the end of the 6-week program. We are seeking candidates who can create safe, joyful, and engaging learning environments with a relationship forward approach to students. Candidates should have strong problem solving skills that is creative and positive in nature. Candidates should have a strong passion for providing music lessons in non-traditional settings that will benefit students with the least access to musical opportunities. Candidates should have the ability to create structure, routine, and consistent expectations in their small group learning space

Contract Length: Oct. 15th – December 20th, 2024 (Extended contract into 2025 dependent on funding)

Times: Thursdays and Fridays 5:30p-7:30p

Skills & Duties:

Passionate about the cause

Basic understanding of art and social emotional learning practices

Prepare and modify lesson plans to meet the needs of students

Prepare materials and equipment for instructional activities and implement lesson plans

Attend team meetings and regular check-ins with the Executive Director

Be punctual and plan accordingly - MUSIC Inc. follows the instructional calendar and is closed during normal school holidays.

Available to work assigned work hours

Exhibit respectful, courteous and helpful behavior to children, staff, parents/guardians, school, personnel, agency representatives, and the general public

Attend required meetings

Build relationships with parents, children, and the school administration/ teachers.

Qualifications and Experience:

Minimum of 2 years teaching experience in both private and group settings (required)

Must meet background clearance requirements, including fingerprinting

Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and an understanding of trauma informed teaching techniques

Experience in other community-based arts programs is preferred

A strong commitment to MUSIC Inc. mission and vision (required)

Strong ability and desire to inspire ALL students to learn and reach their goals

Teaching style that creatively communicates instrumental techniques and ensemble skills to students while maintaining a positive and inspiring learning environment

Excellent personable skills, collaborate nature, and ability to work with administration and families

Excellent organizational skills and strong work ethic

Educational Requirements

Enrolled in a Bachelor of Music or Music Education degree program at an accredited university

Completed 15-20 credit hours towards your major

8+ years formal training on your primary instrument

Candidates with a bachelors in music or music education will also be considered

Pay: $45

All teaching artists are hired as independent contractors and paid per service.
