Sound Designers / Sound Engineers

​2nd Story ​is seeking sound engineers and sound designers for our 21st season. ​Available show dates run from July 2019 - June 2020.

​Somewhere between theatre and live lit,​ 2nd Story is a community organization that uses personal narrative storytelling to foster meaningful connections. ​2nd story is real stories by real people for real change.​ We believe that well-crafted, well-told stories can be a catalyst for change for artists and audiences alike.

​2nd Story works with sound designers and sound engineers to pair music with individual stories.

​Sound Designers:

• ​Create ​specific soundscape​s​ for individual stories during the performance
• Meet and collaborate with the Director to arc a specific sound theme for the entire evening.
• Attend the technical rehearsals, to be scheduled by the show's Producer, and are prepared for the rehearsals with a complete soundscape for the individual stories.
• Attend the performances, and execute their own soundscape during the performances.
• Play house music before, after and in between the performances.
• Ensure each performance is recorded on 2nd Story’s recording device.
• Collect the performance drafts of the stories and send them to 2nd Story staff for archival purposes.
• Time Commitment: 1 full-group first rehearsal, 4 individual 90-minute technical rehearsals, all performances.

Sound Engineers:

• Mix and regulate volume level and sound quality ​between live musicians, storytellers, and emcee.
• Play house music before, after and in between the performances.
• ​Ensure each performance is recorded on 2nd Story's recording device​
• ​Time commitment: Performance night only​

Additional details:

• Each individual show or performance is contracted separately, although it’s possible (and preferred!) to sign on for multiple shows throughout the season.
• Each position has a stipend available.
• 2nd Story shows are primarily performed at bars and restaurants in Chicago. Performance location varies based on show, but upcoming locations include:
  • Pub 626 in Rogers Park
  • Haymarket Pub & Brewery in the West Loop
  • Found Kitchen and Social House in Evanston
  • Twisted Hippo in Albany Park
