ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

ABOUT THE POSITION
SAIC’s adult art and design courses allow students to produce work based on their personal research, goals, and interests, while providing professional development, skill-building, and networking opportunities for both beginners and experienced artists.
Students can take courses in person at our campus in Chicago’s Loop or enjoy the flexibility and convenience of learning online from wherever they are. Courses are centered around a specialized area of study and include regular visits to the Art Institute of Chicago.
Course Title: Patternmaking and Construction: Below the Belt
Format: In Person
Course Dates: 10/4 - 12/13 (30 contact hours)
Meeting Times: Saturdays, 9 A.M. - 12 P.M.
Teaching Assistant: If enrollment hits 10 students, one SAIC undergraduate or graduate student will be assigned to TA the course.
Class Capacity: 14 Students
Course Description: Students in this course create, manipulate, and sew patterns that cover the lower half of the female form. Students learn to draft a basic skirt and pants to develop professional slopers, build waistbands, pattern pockets, and fly fronts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
An Instructor is contracted to teach a Continuing Studies course and is responsible for the following:
- Develops course outline and student supply list
- Sets the tone for the class, establishes guidelines and protocols for behavior and classroom activity, and provides instruction that meets the needs of all learners
- Submits all requested materials to the appropriate administrative offices, including new hire paperwork and/or contracts, course outline, student/class supply list, grades, student and course evaluations, etc.
- Attends a Continuing Studies instructor meeting
- Adheres to all policies outlined in the Continuing Studies Instructor Handbook
- Provides documentation of finished and in-progress student work
- Responds to all departmental communication in a timely fashion
- Note: All Instructors are required to complete a background check.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Regular written and spoken communication with students, teaching assistants, and CS administration.
- Oversight over students in the classroom and during trips to the Art Institute of Chicago.
- Moving throughout the classroom to manage students and supplies.*
- Maintaining classrooms and supply closets, which may include infrequent moving of furniture and heavy supplies or equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- MFA in Fashion or a related field is highly preferred
- At least one year of experience teaching preferred
- Experience writing curriculum and supply lists
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Experience working with a teaching assistant is preferred
- Experience with patternmaking and creating garments from design to execution preferred
