Position Description
The Committee on Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) at the University of Chicago invites applications for a position as part-time Lecturer in Writing for Performance to join a dynamic, multidisciplinary program. The selected candidate will collaborate with TAPS faculty and will be a highly effective teacher at the undergraduate level of one or multiple areas of writing for performance—considered broadly to include playwriting, film and television writing, and other writing for performance. The teaching load will be four to five courses per year over three quarters, including introductory courses and more specialized offerings. Up to one course may be replaced by limited advising, arts administration, and/or committee service responsibilities.
The expected start date is September 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. Please note that candidates should be available to teach in-person from the start of the fall quarter through the end of the spring quarter each year. The initial appointment is for two years, renewable for longer terms contingent upon continued curricular need and following successful review.
Salary Range or Pay Grade:
Lecturer 2: For the 2026-27 academic year, the salary is $40,357 for 4 courses per year, or $49,325 for 5 courses per year. This base pay is for a nine-month academic appointment paid over twelve months. The position also includes a relocation allowance for qualifying expenses. Annual salary increases are outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent; an MFA is desirable but not required. Applicants must have prior professional theater or performance experience and prior experience teaching writing for performance at the college or university level.
