Music Director

Beacon Academy, a Montessori High School, seeks to hire a dynamic teaching artist to music direct our upcoming musical, Into the Woods. This after-school position comes with a competitive stipend and requires a background check. Rehearsals begin in November 2019 and performances take place in March 2020. The candidate for this position will be expected to maintain a rehearsal environment favorable to academic, artistic, and personal growth and to establish effective rapport with students while maintaining proper classroom management. They will work within a team setting of shared ideas and constructive feedback in a collaborative manner.

Duties

• Plan and execute all music rehearsals (which will take place in tandem with acting/dance rehearsals on the timeline listed below);
• Teach student-performers the skills and content needed for them to succeed in their performance of the musical;
• Be present at all tech rehearsals and performances;
• Accompany students on the piano/keyboard during rehearsals and performances;
• Transpose music to fit students’ vocal ranges, as needed;
• Meet with the director and the rest of the production team as needed to ensure a successful production;
• Create a rehearsal environment that actively engages students and is developmentally appropriate for the age, maturity, and interests of the students;
• Establish and maintain standards of student behavior;
• Know emergency plans and evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned;
• Know and follow school procedures and regulations;
• Perform other related duties as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• A degree in music, music theatre, theatre, theatre education, a related field, or equivalent professional experience
• Previous experience music directing in educational and/or professional settings
• Strong piano accompaniment skills
• Excellent communication skills, collaborative spirit, attention to detail, ability to multitask, and interest in working with high school students

Production Dates

• Auditions: November 13 & 14, 2019 from 3:30-5:30pm
• Rehearsals: Monday-Friday, 3:30-5:30pm (November 18-22; December 2-20 & January 6-February 28)
• Tech: February 29-March 4, 2020
• Performances: March 5-7, 2020 at the Puth Family Theatre, 1702 Sherman in Evanston
