About the Gallery
Richard Norton Gallery specializes in American and European Impressionist and Modern paintings, drawings, and sculptures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The gallery offers a wide range of services including consultation, appraisal, consignment, and the purchase of artwork. Located in downtown Chicago at the world-renowned Merchandise Mart, the gallery offers interns the opportunity to work within a professional, working gallery at the center of Chicago’s art and design community.

About the Internship
Richard Norton Gallery is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Art Intern to join our team in downtown Chicago.
Interns will gain hands-on experience supporting artwork preparation, photography, and digital documentation, working closely with the gallery assistant, director, and owner.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparatory and registrar duties including cataloguing, documentation, and artwork storage

  • Handle artwork safely and professionally, including cutting, matting, and conservation-related tasks

  • Photograph artwork, edit images using Adobe Photoshop, and assist with digital documentation and organization of artwork records

Skills & Requirements

  • Computer proficiency, including Adobe Photoshop and basic graphic design

  • Camera skills for photographing artwork

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Clear, professional communication skills, including interaction with both team members and clients

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Professional demeanor, reliability, and willingness to learn

  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds

  • Comfort working on your feet and handling framed and unframed artwork

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience with art handling, preparatory work, or registrar-related tasks

  • Familiarity with conservation or studio practices

Time Commitment

  • 8–16 hours per week during business hours (Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM

  • Commitment of 3–4 months

  • Internships occur on a rolling basis and align with the academic calendar

  • Internship may be eligible for college credit
