Gallery and Publication Assistant

Overview:

LVL3 seeks hands-on help in a creative, fast-paced, independent learning environment. Under the direct supervision of the Managers and Director, the Gallery Assistant will carry out weekly tasks to support the operations of LVL3. This role will provide direct experience in researching a range of artists, designers, and creative projects and writing and proofreading content. Assist with gallery installation, maintenance, and management as appropriate. An engaged Gallery Assistant will have the opportunity to grow into an integral leadership position as part of our small team.

*No gallery experience is required. All individuals with an interest in the arts/creative communities are encouraged to apply.*

Position Details:

The Gallery Assistant will multitask to assist the two major functions of LVL3 : the physical exhibition space, and the online publication. The Gallery Assistant is expected to commit 5-12 hours per week assisting during gallery open hours (Sundays 1-4pm CST), performing daily administrative tasks, and helping the Publication Editor with research and drafting interviews for the online publication. Additional hours are required every 5-6 weeks during exhibition installation and gallery openings. A flexible schedule is appreciated. The Gallery Assistant should be able to commit to a minimum of 6 months with LVL3 with the potential to move into a leadership role.

The Gallery Assistant is expected to promptly reply to emails and task requests. Lateness will not be tolerated. If the Gallery Assistant fails to respond and/or follow through with responsibilities more than three times without a prior notification, they will be reviewed for dismissal. The Gallery Assistant must notify the team via email no later than two weeks in advance for any days they will be unavailable for prolonged communication. A “check-in review” will be held after starting the position, to make sure it’s the right fit. Since we are a small volunteer team, communication is crucial.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and interest in a creative field/contemporary art
  • Familiarity with Adobe Suite
  • Familiarity with Google Suite
  • Familiarity with WordPress or content management systems (no html/css required)
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Ability to complete projects independently with attention to detail
  • Ability to meticulously proofread and edit materials for website
  • Flexible schedule and access to mobile email
  • Applicants must be well versed and aware of current music, arts, fashion, and design
  • Must live within a 30-minute commute of LVL3 (preferably off the blue line).

Regular Duties/Requirements:

  • Proofreading and drafting weekly interviews to be approved
  • Social media management
  • Maintain LVL3 interview archive list
  • Daily research of art, design, music, fashion, and culture to be cataloged in Google spreadsheet
  • Weekly Gallery hours and maintenance
  • Carefully assisting with artists’ needs, including artwork installation/deinstalls
  • Update and maintain website, social media, and mailing list
  • Handling and shipping of artwork
  • Awareness of the gallery’s programming and schedule
  • Maintain regular engagement and awareness of Chicago’s gallery community
  • Proficient in Photography + DSLR usage

The Gallery Assistant must have access to a computer with video capabilities and regular Internet access to maintain an active Gmail account.

Smartphones preferred.
