Full-Time Visiting Faculty Member in Historic Preservation

The Department of Historic Preservation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time visiting faculty member. The position begins in August of 2024.

Program Profile

Established at SAIC in 1993, the Department of Historic Preservation offers a comprehensive and dynamic Master of Science program. Building upon a long-standing city-wide and regional focus in preservation, the curriculum offers studies in the four principal aspects of the wider professional field: architectural history, preservation planning and project management, conservation design, and site interpretation.

Uniquely situated in an art and design school, the program benefits from its proximity to the design studio programs in Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects with whom we share resources and expertise. The intensive two-year program includes on-site and studio-based practical learning, with critical, historical, and contextual studies in cultural landscapes, social conditions, and precedents. The department also offers a Certificate in Historic Preservation, available concurrently to students studying for the Masters in Architecture. The Certificate in Historic Preservation is also offered as a professional extension studies opportunity to non-degree seeking students. Across all of our programs, the Chicagoland region serves as a living laboratory and our departmental projects involve buildings, sites, archives, and collections relating to rural, industrial, urban, and suburban communities.

Responsibilities

The full-time visiting faculty member in the Department of Historic Preservation will teach and advise graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The successful candidate will lead studio courses in preservation planning and restoration design while offering topics-based critical seminar classes in architectural and preservation histories relevant to graduate and upper-level undergraduate students.

Qualifications

A Preservation and/or Architecture Master's degree or other relevant higher degree is preferred, or a combination of academic degrees and relevant professional field experience. Some teaching experience is required. We seek a preservation focused architect who can bring both critical and practical perspectives to their teaching. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Applicants must be authorized to work legally in the United States.

Applicants who have taught at SAIC within the past five years are ineligible for this position.
