FULL-TIME VISITING DESIGNER IN VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN
The Department of Visual Communication Design (VCD) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a one-year, full-time visiting designer faculty position for the 2020-21 academic year, beginning in August of 2020.
PROGRAM PROFILE
VCD students learn the fundamentals—design aesthetics and communication, narrative and time-based structures, identity systems and information visualization—and apply them to the newest iterations in interaction design, aesthetics, and creations not yet imagined. VCD students forge their own combinations of studies, making connections across media and disciplines including print, new interactive technologies, photography, sound, sculpture, installation, film/video, performance, neon, and more. The VCD curriculum is based on the pursuit of human-centered and ethical design strategies, fostering in each student their own unique point of view, thinking through making, collaboration, and creative combinations of diverse media. VCD’s mission is to lead the world in design education, and to teach students who will design the future. RESPONSIBILITIES
Faculty in the Visual Communication Design Department teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The visiting designer will join a vibrant department to teach core discipline courses as well as special topics in the designer’s area of practice. The visiting designer will be expected to teach six courses during the academic year, or a combination of graduate student advising and courses.
QUALIFICATIONS
MFA in Visual Communication/Graphic Design or a terminal degree in other relevant field of study is preferred. Higher education teaching experience is required. A robust design practice in either an academic environment or within the design industry is required. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and design practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds.
