Reports to: Director of Exhibition and Residency

Hyde Park Art Center seeks a full-time staff member to manage the administration of its Jackman Goldwasser Residency and Green Lantern Press programs and contribute curatorially to one or two exhibitions each year. The manager will lead the daily operations of the Residency, develop future partnerships, manage timelines and content for publications, and contribute to the visioning and implementation of programs within the Exhibitions and Residency Department.

Annual Responsibilities:

Content Creation: (30%)

  • Manage a cohort of 8-12 artists and curators in residence as part of the Jackman Goldwasser Residency.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Exhibitions and Residency generate curatorial content for 1-2 exhibitions each year, with particular focus on integrating residency alumni into the exhibition calendar.
  • Produce written content for the Residency and curated exhibitions for newsletters and press releases in collaboration with the Marketing + Communications Manager. Develop content for website pages for the Residency.
  • Contribute writing (when appropriate), content, and project management to exhibition-related publications.

Administration: (50%)

  • Deliver a high-quality experience for all artists and curators who participate in residency programs by providing professional-development opportunities, arranging studio visits, access to classes, field trips, administering residency-related public programs, and more.
  • Develop and administer public programs related to the Residency including open studios, conversations, community dinners, and any other programs featuring resident artists and/or curators.
  • Facilitate visiting artist logistics including travel, accommodations, and stipends.
  • Draft agreements for residents, facilitate orientations, and ensure proper onboarding.
  • Correspond with artists regarding applications and their participation in exhibitions and residency programs.
  • Solicit artists’ marketing materials to be used to promote their participation in the program.
  • Assist with the production of their curated exhibitions by collaborating with other members of the Exhibitions and Residency team.
  • Collaborate with the fundraising department by sharing future plans and insights about programs for grant applications and reports.
  • Steward relationships with national and international partner organizations and program funders.

Program Development: (20%)

  • Research and develop relationships with potential national and international partner organizations and artists.
  • Facilitate the application and jury review process for the Radicle Residency.
  • Contribute to defining and achieving the institution’s equity goals in E&R programs.
  • When appropriate, contribute to planning meetings and studio visits with upcoming and current artists involved in E&R programs.
  • Create and coordinate program plans with other Art Center departments to ensure access, visibility, and participation of residents in other Art Center programs.
  • Contribute to the development of new programs and revision of existing programs in Exhibitions and Residency.

The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to learn and grow with the organization. S/he/they have:

  • Strong organization skills
  • Experience working with artists
  • Knowledge of and interest in contemporary art and art institutions
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking and writing
  • Critical thinking skills, creativity, curiosity, and strong collaboration skills
  • The ability to work independently as well as as part of a team in a unique, fast-paced, and dynamic environment
  • A broader understanding of, and commitment to, the development and support of Chicago artists
  • Interest in social practice, art and social interaction, and social justice practice, as it relates to community projects
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, QuarkXPress, and web content software WordPress

This position works closely with the Director of Exhibitions and Residency and collaborates with all departments. Additionally, staff within the Exhibitions and Residency Department are supportive of each other’s projects by actively contributing time and ideas beyond each individual’s focus area. Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends to manage department events is necessary.

Compensation and Benefits:

The Exhibitions & Residency Programs Manager is a full-time, salaried position with a starting salary of $55k. Benefits include: health and life insurance, dental insurance, art classes and paid time off.
