Textiles Director

Lillstreet Art Center is hiring for a Director position in our Textiles department. This role oversees all aspects of the Textiles department at Lillstreet Art Center with core responsibilities within team management, curriculum management and development, and studio and equipment maintenance. This position oversees the Textiles faculty, monitors, and the studio technician.

Essential Job Functions

Programming

  • Maintain core curriculum, develop new programming, and review course proposals for all five class sessions annually.
  • Edit course titles, descriptions, and class times to best utilize classroom space and increase the likelihood of classes running with the optimal number of students.
  • Coordinate with teachers to develop syllabi, refine curricula, and ensure accuracy and feasibility of material lists.
  • Organize all workshops and short-form programs, including event demos, single-day, and seasonal offerings.

Staff & Student Management

  • Supervise all departmental personnel, including teachers and teaching assistants (contract), studio technician (contract), studio monitors (volunteer), and the Artist-in-Residence.
  • Interview, hire, and schedule teachers, teaching assistants and monitors as needed.Respond to student inquiries promptly in person and via email.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Student Services on student issues, special accommodations, and custom classes.
  • Cultivate a healthy, inclusive, and collaborative studio culture; manage interpersonal and structural challenges as they arise.

Studio & Facility Management

  • Oversee equipment upkeep and repair (e.g., sewing machines, sergers, irons, and all other specialized studio equipment).
  • Manage supply inventory and ordering of all general studio and classroom materials.
  • Manage and schedule all Open Studio sessions.
  • Manage the departmental budget, including purchasing, reimbursements, and monthly reconciliation.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Review Textiles Artist-in-Residence applications, conduct interviews, and select each year’s resident in collaboration with the Director of Outreach & Artist Programs.
  • Provide comprehensive mentorship to the AiR.
  • Manage Textiles Department Instagram

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Textiles; or equivalent professional experience
  • 4+ years of teaching experience
  • 2+ years of studio management experience, textiles-specific studio experience preferred
  • 2+ years of people management experience
  • 1+ years of customer service experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively and as part of a larger team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management & organizational skills

Compensation

This is a 28 hour weekly position with a salary $40,000-43,000 annually.
