Dance Instructor Apprentice

Location: Ballroom Dance Chicago Lakeview Studio

Program Start Date: August 2024

Schedule: Wednesdays & Fridays 6pm-9pm, Saturdays 10:30am-1:30pm (with evening events on the fourth Saturday of each month)

Program Overview:

The Apprenticeship Program at Ballroom Dance Chicago is an immersive and comprehensive training opportunity designed for individuals passionate about ballroom dance and teaching. This program aims to develop skilled instructors who can inspire and educate students while contributing to the vibrant community at Ballroom Dance Chicago. No ballroom dance experience is required, but a background in music, movement, or other styles of dance is highly preferred.

What You Will Learn:

  • Teaching Techniques: Gain hands-on experience in teaching ballroom, swing, and latin dance. Learn to breakdown and explain steps, create choreography, and understand body mechanics.
  • Dance Syllabus Mastery: Study and master various dance syllabi, including wedding dance routines and styles such as ballroom, swing, and salsa. You will progress through different levels, each designed to enhance your knowledge and teaching abilities.
  • Client Interaction: Develop strong client relations by greeting and assisting clients, ensuring they have a positive experience from the moment they enter the studio. Learn to address client needs, answer questions, and provide exceptional service in a professional setting.

Program Structure:

The Apprenticeship Program is structured to provide a balanced mix of in-person instruction, self-study, and practical teaching experience. Throughout the program, apprentices will have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in instructor-led sessions
  • Engage in self-study using BDC's extensive video resources
  • Shadow experienced instructors during group classes
  • Teach semi-private and private lessons under supervision
  • Assist with studio events and social gatherings
  • Have the opportunity to teach for pay as an independent contractor at the studio, ideally 6-8 weeks into the program

Requirements:

  • Background in dance, music, or movement highly preferred.
  • Must be able to commit to consistent attendance and arrive on time for scheduled days. The program will be held Wednesday and Friday evenings and an applicant will pick two Saturdays per month.
  • Must be able to communicate professionally with staff and clientele.
  • Apprentices will begin with a two-week trial period to ensure a good fit for both the participant and the studio.
