Costume Designer
Beacon Academy, a Montessori High School, seeks to hire a dynamic teaching artist to costume design our upcoming fall play, Metamorphoses. This after-school position comes with a competitive stipend and requires a background check. Rehearsals began in September 2019 and performances take place in November; the designer will join the process upon hire. The candidate for this position will be expected to work within a team setting of shared ideas and constructive feedback in a collaborative manner.
Duties
- Design and build all costumes;
- Teach student-performers the skills needed to wear and maintain their costumes successfully;
- Lead the team of students who make up the costume crew;
- Be present at all tech rehearsals, performances, and strike;
- Meet with the director and the rest of the production team as needed to ensure a successful production;
- Contribute to an environment that actively engages students and is developmentally appropriate for the age, maturity, and interests of the students;
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior;
- Know emergency plans and evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned;
- Know and follow school procedures and regulations;
- Perform other related duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree in theatre, a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Previous experience costume designing in educational and/or professional settings
- Strong construction skills
- Excellent communication skills, collaborative spirit, attention to detail, ability to multitask, and interest in working with high school students
Production Dates
- Rehearsals: Monday-Friday, 3:30-5:30pm (September 10 - November 1)
- Tech: November 2 - 6, 2019
- Performances: November 7 - 8, 2019 at the Puth Family Theatre, 1702 Sherman in Evanston
