Instrumental Theatre Company’s The Seagull Audition Notice
Description:
Instrumental Theatre Company is an emerging Chicago group of artists whose mission is to inspire harmony through ensemble storytelling crafted at the intersection of actors and musicians. We are seeking a cast of actors, musicians, and singers for a new adaptation of The Seagull by Anton Chekhov. The 90 minute play with music will feature original songs created collaboratively by the ensemble. This adaptation will be Instrumental’s first fully staged performance directed by Artistic Director Skylar Grieco.
Auditions: Auditions will be held on Sunday May 4th from 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Edgewater Presbyterian Church, The Flight Deck, 1020 W Bryn Mawr Ave Chicago, IL 60660.

Please include your headshot, resume, and any scheduling conflicts we should be aware of based on the dates outlined below.
Actors will be assigned one hour audition windows, and then provided a 5 minute slot within that block based on order of arrival at the auditions.
What to prepare: Please prepare a monologue and musical sample that demonstrates your abilities (instrumental, vocal, both, neither, whatever you feel is a good example of your musical interests and talents.) An accompanist will not be provided. Actors are encouraged to sing acapella or accompany themselves on their instrument. A piano will be available.
Callbacks: Callbacks will be held on Sunday May 11th and will consist of collaborative songwriting/storytelling/devising exercises with other performers.
Characters:
ARKADINA: An actress, late 40s, but also timeless
KONSTANTIN: Her son, 20s, a writer, in love with Nina
SORIN: Her brother, owns the estate, 50s
NINA: Daughter of a wealthy neighbor, inspired, 19
MASHA: Farm manager’s daughter, 20s in love with Konstantin, mourning her life
TRIGORIN: A writer, bores easily, Arkadina’s lover, 30s
MEDVEDENKO: A school teacher, in love with Masha, 30s
Casting Notes:
The characters we encounter in the show are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns. However limiting the descriptions are, we seek to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We are seeking submissions from all races and ethnicities.
It is not required that all actors play an instrument. However, the cast will serve as the band, and an eagerness to explore and create new music with others is essential.
Rehearsal Schedule:
Rehearsal will take place on the North side of Chicago beginning June 1st.
Music Rehearsals:
Sundays in June from 2:00 - 6:00 PM
Blocking and Working Rehearsals:
July 1st through September 4th.
Sundays 2:00 - 6:00 PM
Tuesdays 6:30 - 9:30 PM
Thursdays 6:30 - 9:30 PM
Tech Rehearsal:
Sat 09/06/25 11:00 PM - 5:00 PM.
Dress rehearsals

Performances: 09/11/25 - 09/27/25
Performances are Thursday and Friday nights at 7:00 PM, Saturdays at 3:00 PM.
Performances are scheduled to take place at The Berger Park Mansion, 6205 N Sheridan Rd, Chicago, IL 60660.
A portion of the play is planned to take place outside, while the majority will take place inside the mansion.
Compensation: All artists will be provided a $150 stipend for their work. As a new company, we are aware that this is an insufficient stipend for the amount of time and effort artists put into their work, and we aim to continue increasing this number with each production.
Video Submissions: If you are interested in being considered for this production, but are unable to attend the scheduled auditions, please email info@instrumentaltheatre.org with your headshot, resume, and unlisted YouTube link to your submission. We will be considering a limited number of video submissions from performers who are unable to attend the in person auditions. While we would like to consider an unlimited number of submissions, we do not have the bandwidth to appropriately review them all, and as such, please only choose this option if you genuinely cannot attend the in person auditions. Submissions are due by Saturday May 3rd at midnight.
