Collectors Circle: Private Tour of Haynes Court

Thursday, October 21, 2021
5:30-7pm

Collectors Circle members will take a guided tour with Jessica Cochran of the solo exhibition of new paintings by Mary Simpson, No Island is an Island. The paintings were all made during the past three months, the summer her mother died, and they are named after narrators from books she read during this time. The works are installed on a site-specific installation: gallery walls composed of limestone Venetian plaster, a building material thousands of years old, known for its ability to expand and contract with shifting humidity. Haynes Court is blocks from Palmisano Park, a buried limestone quarry.

Members will also tour the attached residence, featuring the collection of Jessica Cochran and Eric Matthews. Over the last decade, they have acquired works by artists, including many from Chicago, including Amanda Williams, Isabel Nolan, Wesley Willis, Laura Davis, Ryan Richey, Silke Otto-Knapp, Geoff Oppenheimer, Scott Wolniak, Pedro Velez, Betsy Odom, and others.

Mary Simpson was born in Anchorage, Alaska and currently lives in New York. She received an MFA from Columbia University and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program. Her work has shown at Bortolami Gallery, On Stellar Rays, Rachel Uffner Gallery and Simone Subal Gallery, all New York; David Petersen, Minneapolis; Almine Rech, Brussels; Hilary Crisp, London; Chambers Fine Art, Beijing; Seattle Art Museum; Boise Art Museum.
