Culinary Artist in Residency

Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists' Residency is excited to announce the Culinary Artist in Residency! A unique program designed to support and elevate artists working at the intersection of food and art. Application and participation is not limited to creators with traditional fine arts training, but open to anyone who identifies as having a creative practice that considers food material – whether as research, or as a conceptual, sculptural, performative, and/or event based practice.

The program takes place in two parts over the course of a winter and summer season. First, a cohort of up to 6 artists will collectively gather on Ox-Bow's campus for a 10-day residency in late January/early February (dates are determined with final cohort). During the following summer, artists return to campus to create a culminating public program through our culinary series, Taste of Ox-Bow. Collaborators/collectives are welcome to apply. Applications due September 30 at 12:00 a.m. EST. Apply here.

Successful applicants receive room and board, $1,500 artist fee, $600 travel stipend, $200 materials budget for the winter residency, and materials budget plus program and event support for the Taste of Ox-Bow event.

As an art school and residency that has long been centered around collective dining and food as community-making, our Culinary Artist in Residency program celebrates the kitchen as a studio and hospitality as an art form.

From Sara Clugage, 2024-2025 Culinary Artist-in-Resident
I’m grateful I had the chance to learn from my fellow residents during dedicated time for experimentation and skill-sharing. When my fellow residents and I cooked dinner each night, our plans evolved in real time as we discussed, made alterations, and came up with new ideas to try out. It was an immense pleasure to riff on each others’ cuisines, finding out where we overlapped and what strange directions we could take together. It was a singular experience to take this time with other people who think creatively about food in an art context. The skills and knowledge I gained at Ox-Bow will benefit my practice and surely lead to new collaborations with a growing network of artist-cooks.

About Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists’ Residency
As an artist-built and run school and residency, Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists’ Residency is dedicated to the creation and preservation of time and space for arts education, research, practice, and community-building for artists at all stages of their artistic journey. Founded in 1910, Ox-Bow’s egalitarian and intimate environment encourages all artists, regardless of experience, to find, amplify, rediscover, and share their impulse to create. Faculty, Visiting Artists, Residents, staff, and students live together in community on our campus in Saugatuck, Michigan, where they share meals, social time, and the exchange of ideas. We actively encourage our participants to engage across differences in age, regional location, race, and gender identity, learning what it means to be a community by participating in one. Ox-Bow is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization.
