Call for Proposals: ElectroAcoustic Theatre Symposium
CALL FOR PROPOSALS: CURIOUS EATS
ElectroAcoustic Theatre Symposium
June 27-29, 2019
At the Prop Thtr, 3502-04 N Elston Ave
Produced by the Curious Theatre Branch and Prop Thtr, in partnership with the Chicago Laboratory for ElectroAcoustic Theatre (CLEAT)
ABSTRACT
Curious EATS (ElectroAcoustic Theatre Symposium) invites submissions of work that explore the relationship between theatre, sound, and technology. Artists, scholars, and companies are invited to submit works in the following categories:
Fixed Media Theatre Installation
Stochastic and Algorithmic Music Theatre
ElectroAcoustic Theatre/Opera
Instrumental/Acoustic Theatre
We seek original performances of new work that are appropriate for a festival setting and under 75 minutes in duration. Performers will have access to an 8 channel speaker configuration and the symposium encourages experiments with sound as a spacial, temporal, and dramaturgical agent. In addition, we invite papers, lectures, and workshop proposals on the above topics.
DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMS
Fixed Media Theatre Installation
A 5-30 minute fixed media (i.e. entirely prerecorded) audio drama that utilizes CLEAT’s 8 speaker, 3D audio spatialization gallery. This may be a reimagining of an existing one act play for a 3D audio environment, a new piece created specifically for the CLEAT Gallery, technology driven or algorithmically devised audio plays, computer music song cycles/operettas, or any other approach that incorporates theatre and multichannel sound installation in innovative ways.
Stochastic and Algorithmic Music Theatre
Short or Long Form musical theatre and performance works that focus on real time interactions between performer and computer (and/or other technology) based on chance and/or algorithmic decision making. This work may be narrative, abstract, movement-based, or any combination of theatrical forms where these decision making strategies actively inform the dramaturgy of the piece in some way.
ElectroAcoustic Theatre and Opera
Full Length pieces that integrate live performers with ElectroAcoustic, Acousmatic, and/or Computer Music Techniques as a core component of their storytelling/dramaturgy. This may include sung theatre with computer synthesized score, a combination of live musicians and music technology/sound synthesis, or any other avenue that incorporates these approaches in ways that explore the dramaturgy of the piece.
Instrumental and Acoustic Theatre
Short or Long form theatrical pieces that feature unconventional live sonic components as a core dramaturgical element of their performance. This may include dramatic works with experimental vocal/chorus scores as a storytelling device, set piece or props that create live foley soundscapes, movement works with self generating analog scores, or any other approach to theatre-making that does not require digital technology or traditional musical theatre techniques.

If you are interested in participating, please submit a brief proposal outlining your project (including approx. cast size, technical requirements, instrumentation, etc.) along with your biography and any relevant documentation, to Cleatsubmissions@gmail.com. Deadline for Submission has been extended to May 15.
We look forward to hearing from you!
