There’s a particular quote by Gustave Moreau (b. France 1868 – d. France 1898) the famed Symbolist painter and teacher that goes “I am the bridge over which certain of you will pass”. Expressed to some of Moreau’s students, this sentiment is simultaneously hopeful and troubling. Bridges help people to cross something otherwise impassible, but if a person is a bridge, that means they often spend their life getting walked on. The utility of this thought lies in the realization that we all use each other to a certain extent. And, most certainly, it is in the recognition of those moments when we become aware of the fact that another artist’s painting or writing or performance has become a bridge between oneself and the crossing of some raging river of self-doubt, or some impossibly deep canyon of inactivity.
