Barbara A. Diener

Barbara Diener photographs in rural communities in Illinois that are reminiscent of the town in Germany where she grew up. Through the landscape and people she encounters she explores her own relationship to ideas of home, personal history and collective memory, while also addressing the persistence of these communities, despite their disappearing rural lifestyle. Born in Germany Barbara Diener earned her BFA from the California College of the Arts and MFA from Columbia College Chicago. Diener was the recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Events in 2015. She is currently working as the Photography Collection Assistant at the Art Institute Chicago and teaches photography at Oakton Community College.
