Teaching Artist - Theatre Arts

Changing Worlds, an arts and cultural education organization, seeks teaching artists who specialize in Theatre, Drama and related performance arts to teach in our Arts and Cultural Connections after-school and in-school programs in Chicago Public Schools. Changing Worlds’ performance residencies encourage self-expression, ensemble building and critical thinking. Students learn to use their voices and bodies as creative tools to explore culturally relevant themes and tell unique stories on stage. Every theatre residency culminates in a performance or showcase for friends and family. Changing Worlds works with partners to design programming for specific contexts but also presents the following options for schools: Theatre Techniques (acting, playwrighting, design, etc.) Hip Hop Theatre, Improvisation, Spoken Word, Storytelling Through Puppetry,

Compensated responsibilities include instructing students in an after-school studio setting or in collaboration with a classroom teacher in an in-school setting. The teaching artist will develop a curriculum in collaboration with program site and program manager, use their planning hours to prepare materials, teach the essential skills of theatre/drama, and present the history/tradition or cultural context of the art form being taught. Programs will result in the development of a showcase performance, presented to family and friends in consultation with school administration. An important part of this position is to maintain positive relationships with students, parents and school administrators.

Locations of program assignments will be determined by the Program Manager. Timeframes are determined by the participating school or site.


*Support the development of the essential skills in performance/performing arts for the targeted group of students

*Support the development of cultural awareness and identity development and related vocabulary for the targeted group of students

*Plan and implement of a unique curriculum for a targeted group of students

*Engage with students to encourage their creativity and self-expression, building relationships

*Employ a system of effective and compassionate classroom behavior management

*Support the students in the creation of a culminating exhibit or final critique

*Collaborate with classroom teacher or program site

*Consult with Changing Worlds’ Program Manager on the development of programming and its implementation.

Skills & Qualifications:

*Passion for supporting young people, their artistic development, and the arts as a tool for social change

*Experience designing and implementing arts curriculum for students of wide ranges of abilities

*Experience working with culturally diverse groups of students

*Strong experience with and knowledge of the identified drama/theatrical forms and its history

*Strong mentorship and leadership skills

*Punctuality, reliability, and communication skills

*Transportation to/from the teaching site is the responsibility of the teaching artist
