Theater Manager

The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University (GSU) invites applicants for a Theater Manager position. We seek an individual eager to serve with a spirit of generosity, empathy and inclusion.

GSU is the only regional public comprehensive university in Chicago’s south suburban area, serving more than 5,500 students annually. Governors State University is a cultural destination with its 750-acre campus encompassing the world-renowned Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park, a state-of-the-art 1165-seat Center for Performing Arts venue, and the Visual Arts Gallery with work displayed across the campus. Our diverse team of seasoned and passionate individuals works collaboratively with artists, faculty, staff, students, Board of Advisors, volunteer ushers’ corp, and community partners to realize its vision. Together they produce, present, support and promote over 150 events annually.

The Theater Manager is one of our prime ambassadors, serving as the first welcoming point of contact for campus special events organizers and external cultural partners, rental clients, vendors, and other constituents. This leadership position reports to the Executive Director and oversees myriad aspects of operations. We seek an individual with stellar organizational and interpersonal skills, agility, and a collaborative style. S/he will need to plan, anticipate, adjust as well as improvise to work within constraints to ensure that each event is successful and efficient. We seek an exceptionally welcoming and organized host who can offer radical hospitality to guests of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Oversee scheduling and booking activities of the 1165-seat venue and support/auxiliary spaces.
  • Oversee and manage venue safety, front-of-house operations, including concession and bus pick-up/drop off for student matinee groups.
  • Execute contracts in collaboration with the procurement department. Manage rental events, concession budgets, reports, invoices, and collections.
  • Advance and staff events to ensure they meet contractual obligations in collaboration with local hotels and GSU’s custodial, catering, security, facilities, and other departments.
  • Provide oversight to Front of House Staff (Patron Services Manager, student workers, volunteer ushers, seasonal concession/event employees during designated shifts).

Other responsibilities:

  • Support the academic Theatre and Performance Studies program (in residence at the Center five weeks annually).
  • Manage Playbill preparation and support other promotional efforts (in collaboration with the Center’s Marketing team).
  • Support production team and special events office with set-up and other contractual matters.
  • Support special events office and University President’s office with events and special projects.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Professional Theatrical environment with limited hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to lift 55 pounds, walk up and down stairs, and to be on-feet to support event needs for extended periods of time.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule that includes irregular shifts, nights, weekends, holidays and special events.
  • Must work outdoors in adverse conditions such as hot sun, rain, snow, and cold (Arts-in-Education bus coordination).
  • Working with diverse personalities, perspectives, and constituencies.

Starting Salary: $52,562.25 (This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).
