Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s Education Department seeks candidates for a new role, the Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) Producer.

Please note that this position:

  • Reports to the Director of Education
  • Requires availability for occasional nights and weekend events and training, etc.
  • Will operate under a hybrid work model allowing for flexibility in remote and onsite work (subject to change)

Education Department Mission & Overview

Overview: Steppenwolf Education’s unique approach combines play production with educational components to enhance arts education for young audiences, as well as their teachers and families. Every season Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) creates two full-scale professional productions specifically for teens. Working closely with the Chicago Public and surrounding area schools and other community partners, Steppenwolf’s Education department reaches more than 15,000 participants from Chicago’s communities each year, including training burgeoning professionals through its internship, apprenticeship and fellowship programs.

Candidate Qualifications, general

The ideal candidate will have experience producing diverse live theatrical events on a professional level while leading with values of equity and access. They will be excited to execute current programming while also developing a vision for growth and change. They will desire to be part of a highly-collaborative team that works hard but also likes to laugh a lot and always puts the student experience (whoever is defined as a student in that moment) first. The following are required competencies for this position:

  • Communication: The ability to communicate transparently and effectively across mediums with an emphasis on interpersonal communication and public speaking.
  • Relationship Management: Excellent social skills with an emphasis on building and maintaining meaningful and reciprocal internal and external relationships.
  • Cultural Competency: A sophisticated understanding of and dedication to a lifelong process of learning about Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression principles and practices, and the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Additionally, familiarity and comfort working with trauma-informed practices is desired.
  • Project Management: The ability to conceive of both the strategy and operational aspects of a project or program, and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Relentless Curiosity: The ability to productively question the status quo and engage in solution oriented, systems-thinking.
  • Resource Management: The ability to optimize human and financial resources while keeping within core values and program scope and mission.

Position Overview

The Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) Producer is situated in the Education Department and serves as the artistic steward of two productions each year created specifically for a teen audience and performed for student and public audiences. The SYA Producer will work to integrate teen, educator and community partner voices as central in all producing aspects during the play creation process as well as other artistic events and programs within Steppenwolf Education. The Producer will ensure that the quality of SYA shows continue to match the esteemed reputation Steppenwolf has garnered as leader in producing professional plays specifically for a teen audience. The Producer will focus on creating new pathways to SYA for Steppenwolf’s ensemble of 45+ professional artists now and in the future.

Core Responsibilities:

Produce two SYA plays each season:

  • Work with Artistic office and Director of Education to hire directors for SYA plays
  • Work with Artistic Directors and Director of Production to choose designers for SYA plays
  • Work with Casting Director to ensure cast for SYA shows are aligned with mission of Steppenwolf Education and the SYA play series
  • Participate in new play development processes to ensure work is aligned with mission of Steppenwolf Education and this play series
  • Attend rehearsals regularly throughout the pre-tech process
  • Attend all technical rehearsals
  • Attend student and public performances regularly throughout the run of the shows, including while on tour(s)
  • Serve as a conduit for all artists throughout process, connecting their needs to Steppenwolf Education and vice-versa
  • Serve as coordinator for artist contributions to the SYA study guides (created twice annually)
  • Assist in preparing SYA actors for student and public post show participation
  • Assist in preparing Steppenwolf staff, including teaching artists and onsite counselors, for student and public post show participation
  • Regularly attend teen events, community partner events, educator trainings, school programs, and other education events and opportunities in order to deeply know Steppenwolf Education constituents, their needs and wishes for SYA

Serve as lead spokesperson for SYA season to internal and external stakeholders:

  • Collaborating with Steppenwolf’s marketing team to represent artists involved in SYA plays at every stage of the marketing campaign, including but not limited to:
    • Assisting on the writing of show blurbs
    • Assisting with press release and press inquiries
    • Creating social media campaigns that artists can participate in
  • Alongside Artistic and Education teams, develop SYA season theme and represent play content in cross-departmental communication with staff, donors, teens, community partners, audiences, and beyond

Produce annual tour(s) of SYA shows to community parks, libraries and juvenile detention centers:

  • Working alongside the production department, Producer will manage budget, crew, artists and staff related to the tour, overseeing all tour logistics in the preparation and execution of tour
  • The Producer will work alongside the Manager of Education Partnerships to ensure that the tour serves the core goals of partners involved while prioritizing the care-taking of artists and crew
  • The Producer will collaborate with the Senior Manager of School Programs on educational content related to tour programs to ensure continuity between artistic and educational elements of the education programming

Produce other artistic programs within Steppenwolf Education department:

  • In addition to the tour, the SYA Producer will produce monthly events in Steppenwolf’s new education space, The Loft, for teens and other Steppenwolf Education constituents
  • Example events:
    • Hosting a panel discussion of Chicago-area designers sharing their path to becoming a theater professional
    • Inviting the director of an upcoming SYA play to teach a skill-share workshop for teens
    • Curating a skill share event between actors involved in SYA and burgeoning teen actors
    • Produce a reading of an upcoming SYA show for educators bringing students to the production and community partners bringing other youth as audience members

Application Process

We expect this process to require three rounds of interviews, as follows:

  • Round 1: Approximately 10 first round applicants to interview via a 30-minute zoom call with Steppenwolf’s Director of Education; round 1 interviews to be scheduled the weeks of May 2 and May 9
  • Round 2: Approximately 5 of those applicants to interview with members of the Artistic, Education and Production departments via zoom for 1-hour conversations
    • References contacted after Round 2 for those moving into the final round of interviews
  • Round 3: Approximately 2-3 finalists to be invited to Steppenwolf’s campus for a 3-hour interview timeframe, during which they will meet with the theater’s Artistic Directors and other members of the Steppenwolf leadership team, including time set aside for finalists to meet with Steppenwolf’s HR team to discuss any questions related to benefits, paid time off, company culture, etc.


Salary range: $49,000-55,000 annually with excellent benefit package for full time employees, including

medical, dental, vision insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, life insurance,

vacation pay, paid sick time, personal days, Ventra transit benefit program, employee

assistance program and 401(k) matching retirement program.
