Scenic Designers / Artists / Builders

Hello Scenic Artists!

Stevenson High School has immediate and ongoing openings for contract Scenic Designers, Scenic Painters/Artisans, Drafters, and Master Carpenters.

We produce 6 main stage productions annually, across 4 unique venues:

  • black box w/ modular risers (50 seat ally / 90 seat thrust / 120 seats in the round)
  • 250 seat proscenium theatre with steeply raked house
  • 400 seat proscenium theater with traditional sloped auditorium
  • 1300 seat performing arts center

Our adult Production team comprises of:

  • Two Faculty Directors / Seasonal Guest Directors
  • Resident Production Manager / Lighting Designer
  • Resident Costume Designer / Costume Shop Manager
  • Two Facilities Directors / Sound Engineers
  • Fine Arts Manager / Producer
  • A small team of contractors who work as scenic designers, scenic painters, props artisans, carpenters, and drafters. (This is the team we seek to expand.)

Our student casts and crews work with the adults listed above to learn new skills, develop their craft, and create excellent productions September thorough May. Stevenson is National School of Distinction in Arts Education.

Immediate openings will support Romeo & Juliet in our 250 seat-proscenium. The design process begins immediately (built in December for a January load in). We’re seeking:

  • scenic designer
  • drafter (must have experience interpreting design into construction drawings / cut list)
  • lead scenic/properties artist (will lead student crew)
  • ….It is possible one person could fulfill all the above roles, depending on qualifications and availability.

Ongoing openings are expected in the above areas. Even if you don’t have availability for R&J, please get in touch if you’d be interested in future contracts. Additionally, we’re seeking applicants for ongoing work as:

  • Master carpenter (will lead student crew)

We invite resumes from people with the above experience. Teaching / educational theater experience is a plus.

Workplace time/place details:

  • Designer and drafter will be primarily remote.
  • Scenic artists and master carpenters will work on our campus in Lincolnshire, IL.
  • Student crews work 3:30 - 6:00 PM (M-F) and some Saturdays. You manage your own workload and schedule, so not all days are required.

Pay is hourly, based on experience and role.
