Scenic Designer for Legally Blonde
The Glencoe Junior High Project (GJHP), a 50 year-old parent-led, nonprofit organization, is currently seeking a Scenic Designer for Legally Blonde. Stipend contingent upon credentials and experience (estimated range of $2,000-$2,250 paid as in independent contractor). Must be available to construct the set March 25 - April 2, 2023.
Roles and Responsibilities:
-Collaborate with the GJHP production team to design and construct a set for middle school production of Legally Blonde
-Available to construct the set on location in Misner Auditorium at Glencoe's Central School from about March 25 to April 2. Additional evenings may be available after that time for finishing and touch-ups, but the set must be painted + entirely completed by April 16.
-Research and purchase needed materials (in addition to what GJHP has in stock)
-Coordinate with outside vendors as needed (sound / lights, rentals, etc.)
-Cultivate positive/collaborative relationships with production team, school personnel, students and volunteers
-Attend production meetings as needed (mainly with the director)
-Responsible for making sure the space is clean following build / painting etc.
-If available, help coordinate and oversee post-production strike on April 30 / May 1.
-Working knowledge of construction + set design, lighting, rigging, audio and sound, properties, stage or production management, and professional standards of stage safety
-Excellent organizational skills
-Excellent leadership and team building skills
-Some experience working with adult + student volunteers
-A minimum of three years designing and building experience
Stipend contingent upon experience (estimated from $2,000-$2,250 paid as an independent contractor).
There is a scenic budget of up to $1000 for extra materials and expenses and an additional budget not to exceed $450 to compensate over hire builders (at suggested rate of $15/hour, estimating 30 total hours). All receipts are required for reimbursement.
Although this is a middle school show, it is a large-scale production with a long history in the community. GJHP employs a professional team to provide a high-quality experience for students and audiences.

The Glencoe Junior High Project (GJHP) is a parent-led, non-profit organization that has sought to engage Glencoe middle school students into the community since 1973. In order to carry out our mission of fostering socially aware, civic-minded and community-oriented individuals, we offer Glencoe 5th-8th grade students, opportunities to volunteer in their community, attend social activities and events, perform on stage, as well as access to a youth drop-in center in Glencoe's Central School.
ABOUT THE GJHP MUSICAL
Since 1978, the Glencoe Junior High Project has underwritten, produced, and supported all aspects of an annual, inclusive, no-cut musical theatre experience featuring 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from Glencoe. This is one of the largest productions in the area, with a team of professionals providing an experience like those at New Trier HS, including exciting dances, awesome harmonies, great costumes and a live band. Misner Auditorium is transformed with a huge set and professional lights and sound.
