826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. The After-School Writing Lab Program Coordinator oversees the After-School Writing Lab (ASWL) Program, a community-based program that provides 50+ students weekly one-on-one writing support each school year. As Program Coordinator, this person works to build and promote rigorous and creative writing support across the 1st-8th grade range and fosters a creative laboratory for writing and self-expression, and cultivates a strong and supportive community of students, families, and tutors. The position requires an educator with strong bilingual Spanish-English command. 826CHI commits to language translation support and professional development to support the individual within this role. As Program Coordinator, this person is responsible for upholding strong and consistent parent/family communication, upholding a thriving parent/family community, and fostering a strong Volunteer community.

Program Operations (40%)

  • Oversees daily programming of the After-School Writing Lab (ASWL) program
  • Maintains a roster of up to 50 students annually
  • Records accurate daily attendance in Salesforce and in other 826CHI Program tracking applications
  • Runs attendance reports and updates organization and department dashboards for ASWL program
  • Sets tutors/volunteers up for success to effectively serve students in areas such as homework help, creative writing, and behavior management
  • Tracks student registration, attendance, writing and other programmatic paperwork
  • Coordinates student pre- and post- surveys and evaluations
  • Collects, implements, and evaluates student data in order to support the Program team in reporting
  • Generates and updates relevant writing and homework resources for students
  • Coordinates regularly with 2-3 program interns per season and 1-2 teaching artists
  • Communicates with Development Team to relay necessary ASWL information for any grant requirements

Curriculum/Program Design & Implementation (20%)

  • Works with Director of Programs to develop curriculum for chapbook projects
  • Coordinates typing and translation of chapbooks
  • Incorporates cultural values into ASWL programming to reflect dual-language values and initiatives
  • Develops and delivers curriculum, writing prompts, and activities to engage students in the writing process

Parent/Family and Community Communication & Stewardship (15%)

  • Responsible for stewarding parent and family relationships, including communications such as ASWL parent newsletter, Writer of the Month, and organizing parent huddles.
  • Recruits and onboards new families and students into the program throughout the school-year
  • Encourages and supports families to ensure their students are present for programming and shares resources with families to encourage engagement in literacy activities outside of programming
  • Coordinates regular communications to families including email, phone calls, and messages to share updates, events, and ASWL programming calendar
  • Supports and contributes to community, CPS, and partner outreach efforts to recruit students and families
  • Maintains program waitlist and communicates with families waiting for admission
  • Keeps key stakeholders informed through regular communications with students/families

Special Events and Projects (15%)

  • Leads and/or supports 826CHI’s annual arts-based summer camp
  • Coordinates the planning of the ASWL publication release and community events
  • Oversees ASWL publication processes by supporting students with writing implementation, collecting and maintaining records to student writing, and developing student manuscripts
  • Coordinates with guest speakers, teaching artists, and other necessary Program and/or publication collaborators
  • Leads annual translation party for multi-language chapbook

Volunteer Coordination (10%)

  • Collaborates and coordinates with Volunteer Manager to support volunteer recruitment efforts and any additional prepping for volunteers
  • Regularly communicates and coordinates with Volunteer Manager to calendar and schedule opportunities for volunteers
  • Works with the Volunteer Team to provide opportunities for community-building among volunteers, monthly check-ins, and regular appreciation efforts
  • Collaborates with the Director of Programs and Volunteer Manager to plan volunteer community events and special trainings


  • Minimum 3 years experience teaching ages 6 to 13 in structured learning environments
  • Experience teaching writing to 1st - 8th graders a plus
  • Working knowledge of the Chicago Public School system and understanding of educational themes
  • Volunteer Coordination experience, specifically working with service members and interns
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, including public speaking
  • Excellent organizational skills & the ability to multitask
  • Verbal and written Spanish language fluency
  • A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to manage multiple independent projects successfully
  • Knowledge of publishing and design (ideal, though not required)
  • Enthusiastic belief in the mission of 826CHI
  • Outgoing and personable

Vaccination Requirement

All new 826CHI employees are required to be fully vaccinated (2 week following final dosage) by their start date unless they are unable to be vaccinated due to religious and medical reasons. New employees must provide proof of vaccination at the time a candidate accepts the offer (unless pending a second dose) to begin the final hiring and onboarding process.

HR and Reporting

The Program Coordinator is a non-exempt, part-time position (20 hours per week). The Program Coordinator reports to the Manager of Education and is a member of the Programming Team.
