Production Manager

Porchlight Music Theatre is Chicago’s home for music theatre, celebrating the past, present and future of this unique American art form for over 25 years. As an Artist In-Residence at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts in Chicago’s Gold Coast, we present our Mainstage and Porchlight Revisits series in this intimate, historic 218-seat venue. Other programs bring us to neighborhoods across the city, and our award-winning productions delight 35,000+ patrons each season. After the pandemic shuttered stages last spring, Porchlight has been an industry leader with virtual programming, offering a wide range of both free and premium programs. As we plan for our reopening this fall, Porchlight Music Theatre seeks an experienced Technical Director for our upcoming production of Pump Boys and Dinettes; Opening, Thursday, November 4, 2021.

Reporting to the Production Manager, the Technical Director is a key member of the production team and is responsible for the successful completion, install and removal of all scenic elements by facilitating the requests of the scenic designer and managing the scenic budgets and build schedule. In addition, the Technical Director is responsible for hiring and overseeing over hire carpenters. The Technical Director is a crucial part of the production team and is responsible for fostering a collaborative and welcoming environment as well as ensuring that the best possible product goes on stage through implementing all scenic and technical requirements safely and within budget parameters.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

-Work with the Production Manager and Production & Operations Director to ensure that the creative team's scenic vision is accomplished and completed on time and within budget.

- Attend production meetings as requested by Porchlight and respond in a timely manner to emails and phone calls to ensure that all ideas, and thoughts are being communicated.

- Communicate thoughts and concerns as well as budget information to all members of the design and management team.

- Coordinate all scenic logistics including but limited to, material and personal, to build, install and strike the set.

-Ensure that safe practices and OSHA compliance is observed and by all production staff and over hires in all aspects of operation.


-Previous Technical Directing experience, excellent communication and organizational skills are required.

-The ability to read and understand draftings.

-Strong leadership and collaboration with a team of carpenters to execute the design.

-An advanced understanding of scenic budgeting and materials.

-Previous supervision and oversight of in-house Scene Shop is desirable. Must be able to handle numerous tasks at the same time and coordinate all scenic aspects of production.


Compensation starts at $4,000.00 for the delivery of the full production of Pump Boys and Dinettes and the oversight of the Porchlight Revisits Nunsense production that takes place on the same set for three/four performances. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
