Ox-Bow School of Art is an 112-year old art school and artists’ residency. The Print and New Media Studio Manager at Ox-Bow oversees the technical and operational aspects of Ox-Bow’s printmaking and new media studio, including day-to-day studio operations and materials management for classes and studio members. The Studio Manager will ensure a supportive learning environment for a range of skill levels and cultivate a community of learners. The Studio Manager is expected to build and maintain effective relationships with students, studio members and faculty to gain their respect and trust; engage strong communication skills; and be an enthusiastic ambassador of and ensure positive perception of Ox-Bow. The Studio Manager will work directly with the Campus Manager, Campus Director and Director of Academic Programs to ensure an organized, cohesive working environment. This is a seasonal position, schedule to be determined by the Campus Director. Schedule may include weekend and/or evening hours. After a season or more of excellent performance, there is an opportunity for this position to expand into a longer work season and acquire benefits.
Targeted working season for 2022 is early June through early November; exact dates to be determined.
This is a residential position during the scheduled working season. On-site room and board is provided.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Physical Studio and Supply Management
- General oversight of print and new media studio
- Open and close studio at the beginning and end of the academic season
- Set up equipment and studio prior to each class
- Repair and maintain tools and equipment as needed
- Maintain a system for checkout and inventory of digital equipment
- Observe proper studio protocol, including sanitation processes
- Create any safety or information signage and install in studio
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized studio
- Make short-term studio facilities improvements and develop a vision for long-term studio facilities goals
- Faculty / Student Assistance
- Prior to each class, communicate with instructors about individual class needs
- Order supplies for studio and classes as necessary
- Orient faculty, teaching assistants, rental guests and students on use of equipment, studio policies and procedures
- Be available to instructors for class support
- Post and maintain set Studio Manager hours
- Teach private workshops for rental guests
- Coordinate and support private studio rentals
- Administrative / Support
- Manage print studio budget
- Maintain written physical inventory of all supplies and equipment
- Maintain written documentation of studio processes and procedures
- Write end-of-season report assessing functionality of studio, studio budget, procedures, class success, and any recommendations for next season
- Provide technical support for computers, printers, AV equipment and the like in new media lab and campus offices
- Produce art items for promotional and fundraising purposes as assigned
- Other project- and event-based support as determined by the Campus Manager and Campus Director; including but not limited to office, housekeeping, maintenance, and hospitality support
- BFA in art or the equivalent with at least two years technician experience in a print and new media studio preferred; MFA preferred
- Experience with a range of printmaking processes (etching, letterpress, monotype, lithography, screen printing and relief printing processes)
- Experience with new media equipment (digital printers, Adobe Suite) preferred
- Print studio management and/or teaching experience preferred
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work with a wide-range of skill levels, personalities, and backgrounds and modify technical and operational strategies to optimize learning experience
- Must have excellent people skills; possess excellent communication skills – written and verbal
- Strong organizational skills with regard to studio inventories, Materials Safety Data Sheets and general studio safety
- Must be a team player able to work independently as well as in a group
- Must be innovative, resourceful, patient, and have a strong sense of integrity
- A passion for the arts preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be able to stand, bend, and routinely lift studio supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 lbs
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to traverse uneven terrain including stairs
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in high heat and humidity
- Ability to work around potentially hazardous materials and loud noise
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment correctly for most of the day while organizational COVID-19 safety protocols are in place
- Ability to work nights and weekends
- Must be able to travel to and from Ox-Bow Saugatuck campus and/or various vender locations in the West Michigan region
