Seeking Performer/Maker Lead Teaching Artists to lead ambitious large-scale programs

  • Description: Idea Box Integrated Arts is seeking a experienced Teaching Artist with a background in both Performing and Visual Arts to lead ambitious programs tin which students work in teams to create large-scale works of art to be used in performance. Examples of previous Idea Box programs include interpreting the work of Shel Silverstein using giant puppets, transforming a wing of a school in to a pop-up museum, and creating choreography for original songs using shadow screens. The ideal candidagte has a background in one or more performing arts (dance, theater, music, etc.) and is comfortable guiding students to create phisycal objects on an epic scale. If you are not sure if your background is sufficient to qualify you for this position, apply anyway—our training is designed to help fill in the gaps.
  • Locations: Programs are primarily in Chicago Public Schools. This is a general hiring for teaching artists to train for school-year programs—placements will occur at a later date once training is complete.
  • Schedule:
    • Applicants must be available to interview on WED, AUG 21 FROM 10AM TO NOON. This will be a 2hr practical interview—participants will learn about Idea Box and our mission then work in teams to create a project using upcycled and recycled supplies.
  • If you will not be available for the interview, you should still submit your materials—it is possible we will schedule a second interview block.
  • Class days and times will vary. Our programs tend to be primarily daytime weekday offerings with a few after-school programs.

  • Student Age Range: We serve students in K through 12 with a concentration on K-8.
  • # of Students:Our average class size is the size of CPS classrooms—usually around 30 students. There is always a second teaching artist and/or the classroom teacher in the room.
  • Additional information
    • If you have an unusual specialty, we are interested!
    • All programs also feature an academic integration element (ie. Engineering, math, language arts, etc.). Assistance is provided developing the assessments and integration elements for this portion of the curriculum.
    • We are also hiring Assistant Teaching Artists to train for Lead positions. If you think you have some, but not all of the skills for this position, and are interested in developing more, consider applying for an ATA position.
  • Pay:
    • Lead Teaching Artists make between $30-$50 hr. Rate varies by program but is never less than $30/hr.
    • Lead Teaching Artists receive a minimumof ¼ hr paid prep time per teaching hour, paid at the full hourly rate. Some programs have additional paid prep time.
    • When a program becomes available, Idea Box teaching artists receive a breakdown (like this one!) regarding the program requirements and pay, and may decide which programs to accept on a case-by-case basis.
