Online: 2D Animation Instructor: SAIC Continuing Studies Early College Programs

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The mission of Continuing Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is to provide an education that harnesses the transformative power of a leading art and design school, a world-renowned museum, and a vibrant city to support the development of critical thinking, rigorous investigation, and playful creativity. Serving students ages four to adult, we believe having confidence in one’s creative abilities plays a critical role in successfully meeting the unique challenges of today’s world.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Early College Program (ECP) offers high school-aged students the opportunity to engage their creative interests and explore a variety of media in a rigorous and highly engaging setting. Our programs provide a way for students wishing to apply to an art and design school to prepare portfolio-ready work and experience SAIC. Courses are designed to introduce students to new media and techniques, as well as push more advanced students to think in new ways about their practice.

The role of the Online 2D Animation Instructor for Continuing Studies Early College Programs is to develop and lead an Online 2D Animation course for students ages 14-18. This course is a part of the Early College Program Online Summer Institute, a virtual, for-credit, pre-college program for highschool Juniors and Seniors. Virtual instruction can happen from anywhere in the US.

Course Title: Online: 2D Animation

Format: In Person

Course Dates: 7/11-7/29

Weekly Schedule:

• Monday: 9:00-12:00 and 1:00-3:00 (5 hours)
• Tuesday: 9:00-12:00 and 1:00-3:00 (5 hours)
• Wednesday: 9:00-11:00 (2 hours) Students work with TAs for the rest of the day
• Thursday: 9:00-12:00 and 1:00-3:00 (5 hours)
• Friday: 9:00-12:00 (3 hours) Critique day.

Teaching hours: 60

Classroom Assistant: One SAIC undergraduate or graduate student

Class Capacity: 14 Students

Course Description: Work alongside our incredible faculty of artists, designers, and scholars to continue to refine your work in this intensive course, intended for students who want to dive deep into the concepts and processes utilized in the production of 2D animation. You'll learn to turn your drawings into moving images using compositing, layering, collaging, and will build skills in Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and other programs The course will include online demonstrations geared to your passions, visiting artist presentations, online museum resources, as well as time for self-directed work and comprehensive faculty advising. You'll engage in discussions and critiques with a vibrant online community of other students from throughout the country and around the world, create portfolio-quality work and receive comprehensive guidance on developing competitive applications for college admissions to art and design programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

An Instructor is contracted to teach a Continuing Studies course and is responsible for the following:

Develops course outline and student supply list

Sets tone for the class, establishes guidelines and protocols for behavior and classroom activity, and provides instruction that meets the needs of all learners

Submits all requested materials to the appropriate administrative offices as directed, including new hire paperwork and/or contracts, course outline, student/class supply list, grades, student and course evaluations, etc.

Attends one Continuing Studies instructor meeting

Adheres to all policies outlined in the Continuing Studies Instructor Handbook

Provides documentation of finished and in-progress student work

Responds to all departmental communication in a timely fashion

Note: All Instructors are required to complete a background check. All Instructors teaching in youth programs are required to complete mandated reporter training.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Regular written and spoken communication with youth, classroom assistant and CS administration.*

Oversight over a large group of youth both in the classroom and during trips to the Art Institute of Chicago.*

Moving throughout the classroom in order to manage students and supplies.*

Maintaining classrooms and supply closets, which may include infrequent moving of furniture and heavy supplies or equipment.*

QUALIFICATIONS

MFA in Animation or a related field or BFA in Animation with additional professional experience

Expertise in using Adobe programs for animation

At least one year of experience teaching High School Youth

Experience writing curriculum and supply lists

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Experience working with a teaching/classroom assistant is preferred
