One-to-One Direct Support Professional | North Shore Studio

Position Purpose:

1:1 Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for working directly with an assigned artist to provide a variety of supports, including personal care, to expand access to and participation in the Arts of Life community. The 1:1 DSP works closely with their immediate supervisor and program staff who are responsible for supporting the artist’s professional creative practice.


One to One Monitoring, and Support

Maintain detailed tracking of supports per the Artist’s plan and support to accommodate or mitigate challenges to improve wellness and participation.

Activities of Daily Living

Support assigned artist with activities of daily living including, but not limited to toileting assistance and mealtime assistance.

Artist Mentoring

Support assigned artists’ creative practice, professional development, and leadership goals.

General Supports

Support assigned artist with daily transportation


  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum one year working with people with disabilities.
  • Registered Direct Support Person (DSP) in the state of Illinois or willingness to pursue registration through Arts of Life.
  • A valid driver’s license and proof of insurance are preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to pursue upon hire.

Knowledge, skills and behaviors:

  • High level of comfort in assisting with personal care tasks (eating, toileting, etc).
  • Commitment to the process of artistic skill development as an avenue for growth and independence for people with disabilities.
  • Ability to perform basic physical moves such as kneeling, reaching, crouching, bending, and twisting,
  • Ability to lift/carry at least 44 lbs.
  • Strong Communication skills
