A nonprofit professional company with an annual budget of approximately $2.5 million, Porchlight Music Theatre is Chicago’s award-winning home for music theatre, celebrating the past, present and future of this unique American art form for 28 years. In residence at the historic, intimate Ruth Page Center for the Arts in Chicago’s Gold Coast, Porchlight delights more than 30,000 patrons each season with a three- to four-show Mainstage season of inventively reimagined classics, recent Broadway hits and new musical finds; a Porchlight Revisits series of rarely seen musicals in limited run with enhanced dramaturgy; a New Faces Sing Broadway cabaret series; and a free Broadway in your Backyard neighborhood-park summer concert series, in addition to educational programs for students of all ages through classes and camps, Chicago Public Schools and community partnerships.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Porchlight Music Theatre seeks a full-time Managing Director, overseeing the company’s daily operations, helping the company remain profitable and promoting excellence and expansion. The Managing Director is a key member of the senior management team, overseeing the central functions of human resources, finance, administration, annual planning and facilities. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position ensures the organization’s people at all levels have the necessary support to carry out their work, fosters a healthy culture in which all team members can thrive, oversees finances and company resources, engages in business planning and monitoring results, and ensures proper policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management (30%) - Oversee the organization’s finance function and provide leadership regarding resource prioritization and allocation. Manage external bookkeeper, ensuring books are accurate, current and compliant with GAAP and 501(c)(3) non-profit status. Lead and manage the annual budgeting and audit processes.

Human Resources Management (30%) - Oversee and manage the day-to-day human resources function, serving as the internal HR leader and resource for employees at all levels. Manage human resources policies, procedures and programs, overseeing employee recruitment, onboarding, retention and release. Oversee outsourced payroll, compliance and benefits administration. Help foster an excellent organizational culture and work environment.

Administration & Planning (30%) - Help drive annual planning, measuring outcomes and long-range visioning. Manage Administrative Associate and oversee administrative functions to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales.

Facilities (10%) - Manage the company’s lease agreements, the maintenance of equipment and facilities located at Porchlight production offices, and the renting of three studio spaces, scene shop space and costume/prop stock.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in business or finance, or experience equivalent10+ years of professional business experience with at least 5 years of broad financial and operations management experience; nonprofit experience a plus3+ years of oversight on, or significant exposure to, the human resources functionA successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision makingExpertise in financial planning and analysis, including accounting, forecasting, reporting, analysis and budgetingStrong verbal and written communication and presentation skills; ability to build relationships with various stakeholders to drive organizational excellenceAbility to manage multiple projects, successfully negotiate, work under pressure and deal with stressful situations during busy periodsStrong comfort level with complex strategy discussionsKnowledge of accounting and reporting; expertise in QuickBooks Online and ExcelCommitment to training programs that maximize individual and organizational goals across the organization, including best practices in human resources activitiesExcellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholdersWorking knowledge of human resource functions including talent management, recruitment, retention, compensation and benefits; ability to appropriately support employees, maintain confidentiality and foster a positive organizational culturePersonal qualities of integrity, credibility and dedication to the mission of Porchlight Music TheatreCOMPENSATION
