Congo Square Theatre Company seeks a Managing Director to oversee day-to-day operations of the organization, lead future growth and sustainability, and cultivate Congo Square’s image of being a national institution for professional and multicultural theatre. This is an exempt, full-time position. The office is located at 1016 North Dearborn, Chicago, IL 60610. This position will require approximately 35 hours per week, including some weekends and evenings. The Managing Director will report directly to the Board Chair and work closely with the Board of Directors and the professional acting ensemble.
Duties and Responsibilities. The Managing Director will have the following duties and responsibilities:
Financial Management: Create and adhere to the budget. Prepare all financial reports, monitor cash flow, plan for projected expenses, and manage all day-to-day financial responsibilities.
Development and Fundraising: Lead fundraising initiatives. Prepare grant applications and grant reports. Attend all individual, foundation and corporation funding meetings and steward relationships with donors.
Board Management and Development: Partner with the Board of Directors on all board development initiatives. Schedule and plan quarterly board meetings.
Leadership and Team Management: Assess organizational needs and hire a team including, but not limited to, marketing, grant writing, and administrative support. Manage part-time, contracted, and temporary employees. Manage interns and volunteers.
Communication: Champion the mission of Congo Square externally. Serve as the point of contact between ensemble, staff, board, donors and other stakeholders.
Administrative Duties: Oversee tracking system and process for all Congo Square Theatre accounts. Administer contracts and payments. Oversee the upkeep of the office including stocking supplies and general upkeep.
Programming Support: Partner with artistic leadership on production, auditions, and casting. Support marketing and promotion of programs.
Other duties: Attend events, develop ideas for organizational stability, and implement new procedures. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications. Candidates should have the following qualifications and characteristics:
Past experience in nonprofits, arts administration, philanthropy, event coordination, and/or related field(s) is preferred.
Knowledge of QuickBooks is highly preferred.
Strong written and oral communications skills.
Strong stakeholder management skills.
Experience working with professional actors and contractors.
Ability to use and manage applicable technology and database tools.
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Self-motivation and initiative. The ability to thrive in a small, independent, entrepreneurial office environment. Resilience under pressure. A sense of humor.
Willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
Base Salary is $45,000 to $50,000 depending on experience.
