ORGANIZATION

The Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) presents the most compelling authors, artists, thought leaders and thinkers of our time, connecting people to the ideas that shape and define us. Insightful, entertaining and interactive, Festival events are a platform for authors, journalists, scholars, policy makers and other thought leaders, as well as for artists, actors, musicians, comedians and cultural figures. Our programs provoke conversations, celebrate creativity, build community and explore the boundaries of contemporary knowledge and culture. CHF values programming that reflects multiple viewpoints and lived experiences, is accessible and inclusive, and speaks to diverse audiences. We program across Chicago, bringing people and ideas together in a variety of neighborhoods. CHF seeks to facilitate an engagement with ideas that transcend individual concerns, to enable empathy and connection through shared experiences. DESCRIPTION

The Manager of People and Culture, in collaboration with the Director of Human Resources and Administration (HR&A), will provide support on human resources matters including but not limited to employee relations, recruitment, compensation, performance management, team culture and morale, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEAI) initiatives. The position serves as a promoter and guardian of/to the organization’s culture and requires someone who can translate its strategy and priorities into workforce requirements and employee engagement strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES Manage Human Resources and Recruit Talent

  • Support Director of HR&A in planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to Support the organizations human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Support Director of HR&A in the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; training and development; and disciplinary matters and disputes.
  • Identifies staffing and recruiting needs; develops and executes best practices for hiring and talent management.
  • Conducts research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.

Build Relationships and Foster Collaboration

  • Build and sustain excellent relationships across CHF; partnering with senior leaders and other managers to evaluate and resolve employee-related issues.
  • Develop relationships, identify areas for improved institutional structures, systems and performance improvement, and leverage staffing opportunities for the benefit of the organization.
  • Promote inclusivity, allowing for the building of consensus and recognition of teamwork.
  • Motivate and inspire other staff to achieve impact through creativity and leveraging individual strengths to meet organizational goals.

Cultivate Culture and Advocate for DEAI

  • Nurture a transparent and compassionate culture where staff feel able to bring their full selves to work.
  • Deep commitment to DEAI; implementing best practices in this landscape.
  • Serve as a resourceful coach and capable facilitator to staff.
  • Continue to diversify CHF’s talent while developing a robust, dynamic, and inclusive culture.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • At least four years of human resource management experience is required.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and asana preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to be a great team player.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $55,000. Benefits include 100% health coverage (general, dental, vision), 403b, life insurance, short and long-term disability, parental leave, a commuter spending plan, as well as accrued time paid time off at the rate of 17 days for this fiscal year. The Festival is also closed for 10 observed holidays and allows for 1 floating religious holiday, in addition to winter break (December 25 through New Year’s Day) as time off.

WORK LOCATION AND COVID-19 POLICIES

We work in a hybrid model with two days (at the moment) in the office and other days working remotely. While working remotely, you will have access to a laptop computer and a $25 per pay period ($50/month) stipend to offset home internet and personal phone expenses. As part of our commitment to providing a healthy and safe workplace, CHF is requiring employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID-19 within the first week of employment. If a vaccination is not possible, a request for a medical or religious exemption can be made with Human Resources.
