Metropolis Performing Arts Centre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The theater houses 329-seats which hosts hundreds of produced and presented performances each year including a Main Stage subscription series and a variety of concerts, comedy, and cabarets.

Position Overview
The Music Director/Performer will perform in the jazz trio. This role is also responsible for musically directing the vocal performer and other band members throughout rehearsals and performances. This role works closely with the Directing team, Stage Managers, Production Manager, and band to realize the show’s artistic vision. Please note: Metropolis actively seeks a Black jazz musician and/or music director of any gender identity for this show about the historical experiences of Black musicians.


  • At least 2 years of Music Directing and accompanying/performing experience
  • The ability to work independently and in a collaborative, dialectical manner
  • The ability to give precise, constructive feedback
  • The ability to moderate, express concerns, and ask for assistance
  • Additional jazz guitar and bass bandmates or recommendations strongly preferred, not required

Essential Duties

  • Musically direct rehearsals, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, understudy rehearsals, and preview performances
  • Ensure all performers, designers, and musicians have appropriate music, materials, and guidance
  • Contribute to casting, with the assistance of Directors and Casting Director
  • Collaborate with Directors to conceptualize music and script
  • Meet with creative staff and designers to determine appropriate design elements within the given design budgets
  • Attend production meetings, understudy and put-in rehearsals, and ensure replacements are prepared for performance
  • Be available for photo calls, interviews, and other press and promotional activities that may be reasonably requested by the Producer.
