Internship Coordinator and Career Advisor

For more than 150 years, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) has been a leader in educating the world’s most influential artists, designers and scholars. Located in downtown Chicago with a fine arts graduate program consistently ranking among the top four graduate fine arts programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, SAIC provides an interdisciplinary approach to art and design as well as world-class resources, including the Art Institute of Chicago museum, on-campus galleries and state-of-the-art facilities. SAIC’s undergraduate, graduate and post-baccalaureate students have the freedom to take risks and create the bold ideas that transform Chicago and the world—as seen through notable alumni and faculty such as Michelle Grabner, David Sedaris, Elizabeth Murray, Richard Hunt, Georgia O’Keeffe, Cynthia Rowley, Nick Cave, and LeRoy Neiman.

BASIC FUNCTION: The Internship Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Employer Relations to create professional opportunities for SAIC students, including internships, jobs, and other career-related experiences.

They administer the CAPX and Professional Practice internship programs and all related activities including advising students on preparing for successful internship experiences, assisting students with registration for credit, and monitoring internship sites. With the Assistant Director of Employer Relations, they create policies and procedures to ensure the academic quality of internships.

The Internship Coordinator advises students and gives presentations on career-related topics.

  1. Provide administration for the Professional Practice and CAPX Internship programs.
    1. As the primary representative of SAIC internships to students and lead the initiative to create a high-quality, meaningful for-credit work experience.
    2. Work collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Employer Relations to create policy and procedures ensuring the academic quality and integrity of internships.
    3. Collaborate with faculty and academic departments to identify and promote internships.
    4. Develop and monitor current internship sites. Conduct site visits to evaluate appropriateness of internship sites and ensure quality of internships. When required, liaise with employers to resolve work site issues.
    5. Execute strategies to promote the internship program to students, through informational sessions and class visits, Partner with the Assistant Director of CAPX Communication and UX to create print and online marketing, and social media. develop print and online marketing, and social media to create enthusiastic student demand for the program.
    6. Develop and present internship informational workshops and effective self-directed career and internship information via online access, workshops and career resources.
    7. With the Assistant Director of Employer Relations, they create policies and procedures to ensure the academic quality of internships.
    8. Liaise with International Affairs to ensure all international students who participate in the Internship program are compliant with all INS regulations regulations including I-20 and CPT regulations.
    9. Liaise with the Registrar to ensure all internship registrations are complete and all grades submitted.
    10. Partner with the Assistant Director of CAPX Communication and UX to video and photo document internship students for marketing and showcase examples for the SAIC website.
    11. Assist the Assistant Director of Employer Relations to host the annual Job and Internship Expo.
    12. Contribute metrics and create monthly reports related to the SAIC Internship program, including number of students placed, conversion of internships into full time employment, etc.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned.
    1. Securing an internship opportunity that enhances their academic experience.
    2. Career skills, e.g. networking interviewing and on-line presence.
    3. Post-graduate opportunities including employment development, residences and freelance work.
    4. Career and job search strategies.
    5. Career search documents, e.g. resumes, cover letters, portfolios. Perform other duties as assigned.


  1. Bachelor’s degree is required
  2. A minimum of three years’ experience in a professional work setting, such as career services, human resources, student affairs, academic advising, or arts administration.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge about the working world of artists, designers, writers and scholars, their required/recommended career preparation, and potential paths to achieve professional goals.
  4. Able to conceptualize and execute complex student-focused initiatives to achieve stated goals.
  5. Able to present and advise on a wide range of career-related topics.
  6. Able to build collaborative relationships with students, faculty, employers, alumni and SAIC colleagues, and to work effectively within an academic environment.
  7. Demonstrated proficiency in MS
  8. Demonstrated facility with computer-based systems and online platforms, and comfort with adoption of new digital processes.
  9. Demonstrated organizational abilities and exceptional written and verbal communication/public speaking skills.
  10. Able to start, manage, and complete projects independently from inception to completion with full accountability for deadlines, quality, and accuracy.
  11. Able to prioritize and balance a number of projects simultaneously while maintaining a high quality of work in a fast-paced environment.
  12. Entrepreneurial, collaborative style, with excellent human relations skills. Able to build relationships with students, faculty, employers, alumni, and colleagues.
