Human Resources Manager

The Old Town School of Folk Music is seeking a HR Manager with a strong generalist background, including significant recruiting and employee relations experience.

Key Duties

  • Develop recruiting and retention strategies with a focus on diversity recruiting efforts, find new recruitment sources, conduct community outreach and build candidate pipelines for organization to develop and retain high level talent
  • Work with stakeholders (HR, leadership team members, internal committees, etc.) to implement HR and DEI initiatives
  • Create and work to enhance DEI accountability through enhancing people practices (i.e Recruitment, etc.)
  • Build a positive brand image of working at OTSFM
  • Handle employee and labor relations issues
  • Conduct investigations as needed
  • Work on projects related to performance management, onboarding, benefits, compensation, engagement and other areas
  • Support implementation of new/revised practices, policies or procedures (including developing supports, tools)
  • Manage events as neededOther duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • SHRM or HRCI certification preferred
  • Minimum of three years' of related experience (Human Resources, DEI, etc.) required
  • Minimum of two years' of recruiting experience.
  • Experience with diversity recruiting is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience with employee relations and conducting investigations required
  • Ability to manage projects required
  • Labor relations experience strongly preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel occasionally to various OTSFM locations (local) and partner sites in Chicago where needed
  • Familiarity with ADP WorkforceNow or similar HR system is required
  • Experience working in a nonprofit is helpful
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and to visit other Old Town School locations in the Chicago area periodically
  • Demonstrated commitment to DEI required
  • Bilingual in Spanish helpful

Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music (“OTSFM”) is the largest community school of the arts in the U.S. and a non-profit organization committed to celebrating American music and global cultures. Founded in 1957, Old Town School provides a wide range of music, dance, and arts courses to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Whatever one's interest, Old Town School provides broad access to more than 700 weekly class offerings, a broad array of private lessons, and over 400 concerts and community events per year.

Old Town School of Folk Music opened its Lincoln Square facility in 1998 and expanded in 2012. The Old Town School operates two campuses located in Chicago's Lincoln Square and Lincoln Park neighborhoods that include world-class concert halls, classrooms, an award-winning music store, and a music resource center. Online classes were introduced in 2020 and students from nearly every state and a dozen countries participated over the course of the pandemic.
