The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) was founded in 1940 by a group of Black artists and advocates as a destination for black art, and to support the careers and development of Black artists. The organization has been a primary incubator for African-American artists and movements that include AfriCOBRA, Amiri Baraka, Charles White, Elizabeth Catlett, Gwendolyn Brooks, Gordon Parks, and several others. SSCAC recently celebrated its 80th anniversary and is reasserting itself as an innovative space for emerging and established Black artists.

The South Side Community Art Center is seeking a part-time exhibitions manager to oversee exhibition operations, logistics and administration.


  • Coordinate all operational needs for installations and de-installations including shipping logistics
  • Manage all exhibition correspondence, including: artist communications, consignment agreements, applications for juried shows, and contractor agreements
  • Inventory incoming artwork and maintain condition reports
  • Coordinate and schedule handlers, preparators, photographers and contractors as needed
  • Build and manage exhibition budgets and timelines. Communicate with staff on timelines and resources for exhibits
  • Coordinate production of exhibition materials including exhibition cards, checklists, vinyl, wall labels and interpretive material
  • Liaise with the Facilities Manager on gallery and exhibit maintenance, including: lighting design, gallery repairs, cleaning, etc.
  • Provide information and training for docents/volunteers on current exhibitions
  • Maintain the existing exhibition checklist and update as needed


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least 3 years' experience in exhibitions
  • Excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and written
  • Demonstrated budget creation and management experience
  • Ability to coordinate teams and work in a creative, multidisciplinary, and fast-paced environment
  • Strong personnel management skills

COMPENSATION: The role offers a competitive rate $20-$30 per hour based on qualifications and experience; a casual work environment; hours based on exhibition schedule; two weeks paid vacation
