Director of Community Organizing

Arts Alliance Illinois champions arts resources and policies that benefit our members and all Illinois residents. As the only statewide, multidisciplinary organization concentrated on the strength of arts and culture, the Alliance takes on challenges that no single organization or artist can face alone.

Position Summary

The Alliance seeks a Director of Community Organizing to spearhead our community building efforts in the creative sector of Illinois. They will facilitate member engagement to shape the Alliance’s policy agenda and priorities, translating this knowledge into short- and long-term, community-driven, policy change efforts. The Director of Community Organizing will report to the Executive Director, partner with the Deputy Director of Civic Engagement to shape our policy agenda and campaigns, and coordinate with the Program and Field Engagement Manager to ensure our public programs align with the needs of the sector.

The Director of Community Organizing has strong organizational and time management skills, knows how to manage a large volume of relationships and has strong written and oral communication skills. They must have previous organizing or advocacy experience -- having seen through at least one project or campaign from conception to completion. They must also be proficient in office software and be willing to learn how to leverage our membership and donor database. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, capable of devising plans quickly and effectively, yet a team worker who leverages the staff’s expertise and values feedback. They must be committed to racial equity, skilled in relationship building and capable of listening to understand before translating identifiable needs into actionable steps.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with diverse constituencies (artists, arts administrators, educators, and funders across race, class and gender) to align different interests towards the common goal of bringing resources and equitable policy change to the creative sector.

  • Work with geography-specific, discipline-specific, race-specific, culture-specific, and other key communities of Illinois artists, cultural organizations, arts advocates, creative businesses, and creative workers to coalesce community needs into statewide coalition-building efforts.

  • Conduct grassroots outreach in the creative sector statewide on behalf of the Alliance to grow our membership base and deepen our relationships in the field.

  • Contribute to a specific earned revenue goal tied to the Alliance pay-what-you-can membership model.

  • Identify issues and strategize, in partnership with other Alliance staff, to implement short and long-term advocacy and other public will campaigns at the local, regional, and statewide levels.

  • Ensure active involvement of Alliance members in local, regional, and statewide advocacy and other public will campaigns through regular mobilization and other campaign actions/events.

  • Provide input to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director of Civic Engagement and the Programs and Field Engagement Manager to shape both advocacy and public will campaign strategy and messaging.

  • Assist with coordination of rapid response efforts to political changes affecting the creative sector.

Relevant Skills and Experience.

The ideal candidate will be, or have, the following:

  • Previous experience working in the arts and culture sector in Illinois.

  • Minimum 5 years of community organizing experience or experience working on the grassroots level with a membership organization.

  • Strong understanding of the importance of cultural competence when working with diverse communities.

  • Exceptional verbal communication skills, social media savvy, and writing skills.

  • Strong familiarity with the challenges facing arts venues, arts nonprofits, and artists in the state of Illinois.

  • Strong familiarity with web-based office software like Google Suite, Microsoft 360, Slack, Ring Central, etc or a willingness to learn.

  • Someone who thrives working remotely and independently, while simultaneously being a key member of a dynamic team.

  • Motivated self-starter who knows how to operate effectively and calmly within multiple competing priorities.

  • Ability to self-reflect and pivot based on feedback when necessary.

  • Previous experience with Salesforce, or similar CRMs, is a plus.

Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt, position with a salary ranging from $58,000 to $63,000 based on experience. Arts Alliance Illinois provides a suite of benefits to ensure an optimal work/life balance for our staff. This includes unlimited paid time off with a minimum of 15 days guaranteed plus federal holidays and end-of-year break, 403(b) match after the first year, medical/dental/vision insurance, phone and internet stipend, and paid family leave.

Location

Arts Alliance Illinois has offices in Chicago, however, this position is remote during the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to be so afterwards. As the public health crisis improves there will be requirements for occasional travel to Chicago and other areas of the state. That said, o​nly people who will be full-time residents of Illinois during their term of employment with the Alliance will be considered for this position.
