Dance Instructor

Job Title: Dance Instructor (part-time)
Start Date: Immediately
Location: Marvin S. Weiss and Burning Bush Community Centers
Work Hours: Work hours vary on weekdays from 4:00-8:30pm, dance season is September 2021 to March 2022
Compensation: $18-$22 an hour to start - depending upon qualifications
Reports to: Recreation Supervisor

Position Summary:
The Dance Instructor (part-time) is responsible for leading and teaching a varied selection of dance classes including but not limited to ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and poms. Classes will be taught in a manner that contributes to the student’s well being, growth, and development. The instructor will need to provide an environment that is comfortable, safe, and fun. This position reports directly to the Recreation Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have studied some form of dance, related to the classes being taught, for at least one year.
  • Prior dance teaching experience of at least six months is preferred.
  • Must have a high school diploma.
  • Reliable and prompt for classes.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and park district staff

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Follow our program philosophy: “Fun and personal skill development are top priorities.”
  2. Develop a thorough understanding of the park district’s policies and operations and enforce them in a positive manner.
  3. Work with Recreation Supervisor and other dance instructors to develop dance program.
  4. Plan dance classes for the three annual program brochures the park district produces.
  5. Help dancers develop large and fine motor skills.
  6. Work with the Recreation Supervisor on the annual dance recital, and work at the dance rehearsal and recital.
  7. Assist supervisor with costume selection and purchasing.
  8. Use appropriate and positive discipline and language at all times when in the park district.
  9. Must be on time and prepared for class.
  10. Wait until class participants have proper means home before leaving.
  11. Take program attendance regularly and turn it into the supervisor at the end of each session.
  12. Enforce safety disciplinary policies and procedures.
  13. Obey the practical safety rules, regulations, and procedures established by the River Trails Park District.
