About the Department
The Department of Music at the University of Chicago is a world-renowned center for research and teaching of Music Composition, Ethnomusicology, and Music History and Theory. Its acclaimed faculty includes scholars and composers who are prominent leaders in their fields. The Department offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees, and also sponsors two major performance components that are closely integrated with the academic offerings of the Department: a professional presenting series, University of Chicago Presents, which brings world-class artists to campus for concerts and educational programs within a variety of concert series; and a wide-ranging Performance Program, whose 18 ensembles and programs cover a wide range of musical genres, historical periods, and cultural settings. This close conjunction of scholarship and performance, plus the remarkable breadth of distinctive performances on campus – including classical repertoire, early music, contemporary music, jazz, and world music genres, performed by visiting professionals, resident ensembles, and talented student musicians – distinguish the University of Chicago Department of Music from its peer institutions, and contribute meaningfully to the cultural life of Chicago.
The job performs routine assignments related to marketing plans for a department, program, product or business with moderate/high guidance and direction from others. Coordinates and evaluates the production of marketing communication and research programs, using existing procedures to solve routine problems that may arise.
This position will encompass marketing and communications responsibilities for University of Chicago Presents and for the Department of Music Performance Program in equal measure. In addition, the position will support alumni and fundraising efforts as related to marketing and communications. The position will report to two supervisors, the Director of Public Relations for the Student Performance Program, and the Executive Director of UCP.
For the University of Chicago Presents, the position will entail planning, developing, and disseminating information designed to inform the public of UCP’s programs, including the Classic Concert Series, Howard Mayer Brown International Early Music Series, Jazz at the Logan Series, world music series, and the main performances of the Center for Contemporary Composition.
For the Department of Music Performance Program, responsibilities will include marketing and support work for the 18 Performance Program ensembles and programs, the Don Michael Randel Ensembles-in Residence and Music Department Artists-in-Residence, the Center for Contemporary Composition’s outreach and educational activities, and for Department of Music academic and alumni audiences.
This is a full-time position with benefits. Current circumstances require the ability to work remotely, in accordance with University COVID guidelines; must be available for in-person work and events in Chicago when circumstances change.
- Creates digital and print marketing materials and assists with press announcements, radio ads, video clips, and other multi-media promotions; distributes to campus, community, and city audiences and to media lists throughout Chicago.
- Assists with the planning, facilitation, and promotion of digital and in-person concerts and events for UChicago Presents and the Department of Music. Interacts with press and concert patrons and distributes marketing materials at live events as needed. As live concerts and events frequently take place outside of regular business hours. this job both requires and offers some time flexibility.
- Works with the Humanities Division development team to generate, implement, and manage fundraising efforts for UChicago Presents and for Performance Program and Department of Music alumni and supporters, as needed.
- Maintains e-mail and social media schedule / postings for multiple UChicago Presents and Department of Music accounts (Constant Contact, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.).
- Manages routine website updates and University calendar listings for on-campus promotion.Provides support for audience development initiatives, outreach, long-range planning, and special projects for both organizations, as requested.
- Serves as liaison with the UChicago Arts Box Office for ticket sales and operations; reviews weekly sales reports and databases (including list exchanges) for UCP to support growth.
- Assists in developing marketing communications, advertising, or publicity materials with a moderate to high level of guidance from others.
- Performs one or more of the following marketing functions: marketing communications /advertising; Web blogs or digital marketing; market research; development or review and update of the marketing infrastructure and management of external sales agency relationships.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Education: Bachelor’s degree.
Experience: Prior experience working in an office environment.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
- Broad knowledge of classical music, world music, and other musical genres (terms, composers, repertoire, protocols).Solid knowledge of English grammar.
- Training in journalism and/or demonstrated competency in writing press releases and media announcements.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office.Familiarity with social networking platforms and website management.
- Competency in database entry and database management.
- Good communication and telephone skills.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills, coupled with excellent editing and proofreading skills.
- Create accurate and effective press releases as well as engaging materials for social media dissemination.
- Utilize social media and the web platforms strategically and analyze their effectiveness in reaching constituents.
- Proficiency with graphic design tools, particularly for social media and website management.
- Strong organizational skills, plus ability to plan and carry out detailed steps for a given project.
- Apportion time and priorities equally between two offices.
- Work with internal and outside media sources.
- Meet deadlines, and adjust to an irregular work flow.
- Polished presence, professional attitude, positive outlook, and love of music.
- Strong work ethic and spirit of collaboration.
- Fast-paced environment, ability to complete specified tasks in prescribed amount of time essential.
- Office environment - two campus locations corresponding to the two components of the job; comparatively small office spaces, working in close physical proximity to other employees.
- Currently work remotely in accordance with University COVID guidelines; must be available for in-person work and events in Chicago when circumstances change.
- Sit at a computer for 2-4 hours at a time.
- Periodic walking to other campus locations.
