About Hoyne Street Playgroup:
Hoyne Street Playgroup (HSP) is a non-profit parent‐run preschool cooperative that has been in existence for over 35 years and is located in Logan Square. Parents rotate through leadership roles, some currently work as teachers, and they meet monthly to oversee operations, as well as to foster a generous, communicative, and loving community. HSP believes that children learn best through play. The daily schedule balances free play with structured, stimulating activities, and naps for the children that require it. Currently, the goal is to be outside as long as possible to mitigate the potential for virus spread. The teachers observe each child’s needs and design activities that fit their interests and foster their development. They nurture child-to-child communication for conflict resolution and developing social-emotional skills.
The structure is 2 teachers per day that work together as a team caring for up to 10 children per day, and 3 teachers employed. Ages range from 2-5 years of age. The adults provide stimulating activities and nurture positive relationships. In addition to developing and implementing daily activities, teachers need to change diapers, clean up after daily activities, and do minor administrative activities such as keeping track of basic supplies. As we adapt to the uncertainties inherent in coping with the pandemic, this is an opportunity for an innovative educator to be involved in shaping responsive programming.
