Collections Project Associate

The John Michael Kohler Art Center is looking for a Museum Collections Associate. This individual will report directly to the Director of Collections and Exhibitions and will be working between the Art Center and Art Preserve. The Collections Associate will be responsible for the following duties:

1. Fabrication and preparation of custom objects including artwork mounts, architectural components as they relate to artwork, pedestals, crate building, and painting

2. Operation and safe use of various tooling and machinery including telehandler, gantry, welding equipment, and woodworking equipment

3. Work on various aspects of conserving both indoor and outdoor sculptures

4. Translate concept sketches into 3D models using industry standard software

5. Manage the care, packing, and shipping of all works of art and related materials loaned to or owned by the Arts Center

6. Long- and short-term planning for objects within the collection.

7. Ability to work directly with artists to install their works of art..

8. Work collaboratively both within the Exhibitions department and with other departments in the Arts Center on special projects and time sensitive projects

9. Maintain and instill a high level of standards related to collections care.

10. Work closely with the Collections Manager to oversee the safety and movement of all artwork entering and leaving the facility.

The Collections Associate position requires:

• Bachelor’s degree or 5 years equivalent related experience

• Previous collections experience

• CAD 3-D design using industry standard programs

• Art handling experience preferred

• 25ft truck driving experience

• Valid Wisconsin driver’s license

• The ability to read design drawings, and use artistic abilities to execute mold making, faux finishes, complex reproductions, and precarious architectural elements

• Must be comfortable in work shop environment with basic knowledge and familiarity

with woodworking, metalworking and solid surface construction

• Working hours of daytime, evenings and weekends as scheduled during open hours of operation.

Physical Demands of this role:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently moving throughout the Art Preserve and Art Center; usage of hands to finger, handle, or touch objects; and talk or hear. The employee is required to remain mobile, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and smell. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Moving heavy objects, ascending a ladder, and strenuous physical activities.
