Clarinet Instructor- Private Lessons


Merit School of Music is seeking a clarinet instructor to teach Private Lessons through our Merit Music in Communities (MMIC) program. Students in the MMIC program are comprised of beginning through advanced level in grades 4th – 8th. Qualified candidates may also be considered to teach in Merit’s onsite Private Lesson Program.

Organization Overview

Since its founding in 1979, Merit School of Music has successfully motivated and inspired over 50,000 young people with high-quality music instruction. The School’s broad-ranging comprehensive curriculum, extensive level of financial aid, sense of community and the standard of excellence set forth by the faculty and students are major components of its success. Merit offers a multi-leveled, structured curriculum in a college preparatory environment. Programs take place at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop and at nearly 30 locations in neighborhoods across the City. Instruction is offered to approximately 3,000 students of all ages, from infants to adults, and from beginners to the Juilliard-bound by over 150 accomplished faculty members. Merit has an annual operating budget of $6 million, of which nearly half is supported by contributed revenue.

Reporting Relationship

The Clarinet Instructor reports to the Band Program Director.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities of Clarinet Instructor include, but are not limited to:

• Delivering high-quality instruction to students in weekly lessons or classes • Communicating with on-site Merit band directors to determine individual student needs and goals • Providing Merit staff with student recommendations for additional Merit programming • Participation in Merit faculty meetings and/or department meetings • Timely correspondence with Merit staff and students/families • Other projects as assigned

Personal Skills/Attributes/Qualifications

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

• Proven success teaching clarinet students at various skill levels from beginner through advanced • Strong classroom management skills • Ability to collaborate and work well with colleagues and administrators • Punctual, professional, and collegial • Flexible and adaptive disposition • A high level of personal musicianship • Spanish language skills a plus

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience/training


➢ Private Lessons taking place at Carson Elementary (5516 S Maplewood) will occur Monday – Friday between 1:00 – 6:00pm, from time of hire until May 22 and will average 5-7 hours per week. ➢ Private Lessons taking place at Merit’s Joy Faith Knapp Music Center are scheduled based on student-teacher availability.


Compensation is $44.00/hour for private lessons regardless of location. Off-site private lessons at MMiC school sites are eligible for mileage reimbursement in accordance with Merit School of Music policies.
