The Chicago Humanities Festival connects people to the ideas that shape and define us, and promotes the lifelong exploration of what it means to be human. CHF fosters curiosity, celebrates creativity, explores the boundaries of contemporary knowledge and culture, and challenges us to see ourselves and the world anew. Collaborating with nearly 40 of Chicago’s major cultural and educational institutions, CHF produces over 100 events annually and partners with nearly 40 venues around Chicago annually, as well as stewards a vibrant online home for the humanities. CHF has an international reputation for innovation and creativity, featuring an exceptional roster of writers, scholars, performers, and visual artists in its programs and online.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

CHF is seeking part-time seasonal A/V technicians (paid on a span of day rate) for venues all over the Chicago area including, but not limited to: Evanston, Hyde Park, Bronzeville, and Downtown Chicago. AV technicians work under the guidance of CHF’s full-time production staff and collaborate as a team with CHF’s seasonal stage managers, house managers, box office managers, van crew, and the venue’s staff. Ideal candidates should be seasoned sound engineers with live multimedia event experience. Additional experience with stage lighting and projection is a plus. CHF’s Fall Fest 2022 dates range from Sept. 10 - Dec. 10. While we are looking for techs with availability during that range, we are also seeking the role on a rolling basis for our spring and fall festivals and single events.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Event prep

  • Participate in a paid training session (virtual, typically 2 hours).
  • Meet with CHF and venue staff for site visits to become familiar with your venue assignments (typically 1-2 paid hours of site visits per venue scheduled).
  • Work with program and production staff to ensure that venue(s), technical, and performance requirements meet all specifications on time and as scheduled.
  • Provide recommendations for venue specific improvements, such as supplemental equipment rental.

At events

  • Oversee set-up and operation of sound equipment as required and access required sound/light equipment supplied by venue, festival, or vendor.
  • Review tech sheets and run of show documents provided by CHF staff.
  • Assist with the load-in, set-up, strike, and load-out of CHF staging and equipment.
  • Assist with light hang and focus and program light and sound cues as needed (often not needed at most CHF events).
  • Professionally meet and greet presenters and performers and effectively respond to their requests the day of their programs or shows as needed. Lead sound and visual media check with presenters.
  • Make quick decisions and augment performers/presenters sound/light needs throughout the festival.
  • Execute and augment sound and lights during all assigned programs/performances.
  • Working closely with the CHF stage manager, maintain communications between CHF venue(s), staff, presenters, and performers when needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3+ years’ experience working onsite for live event setup, operation, and strikes.
  • Proficiency with digital audio consoles.
  • Berhinger X32/M32, iPad mixing, networking for control, etc.
  • Mixing for speech and performance
  • Proficiency with Mac and Windows operating systems.
  • Experience with lighting and projections is a plus.
  • Flexibility, resourcefulness, assertiveness in problem solving.
  • A professional demeanor, excellent communication skills, enjoys collaboration.
  • Candidates should have prior event and production experience and enjoy complex multi-layered projects in multiple venues.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends per our event schedule.

Compensation
This is a part-time contractor position paid on a 1099 with day rates between $200 - $500 depending on span of day schedule. Additional hours for site visits included on contractor invoice at a rate of $25/hour.

COVID-19 Policies

As part of our commitment to providing a healthy and safe workplace, CHF is requiring employees and contractors to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID-19 within the first week of employment. If a vaccination is not possible, a request for a medical or religious exemption can be made with Human Resources.

All stage managers and AV technicians for our festival will be scheduled with an A and B (on call) team in the event of illness or emergency.
