AUDIENCE SERVICES MANAGER
Fine Arts Building, a historic landmarked building located at 410 S. Michigan Ave, home of two performance spaces, Studebaker Theatre (a 600 seat proscenium) and Playhouse (350-400 cap theatrical event space) is seeking a dynamic, strategic and thoughtful Audience Services Manager to add to our growing team. The right candidate will be a creative problem solver, a team player and eager to build new polices, procedures and infrastructure. This is a ground floor opportunity to be part of building a new commercial art space in a landmark historic building. This is a major opportunity for impact and growth. You will be the first ever Audience Services Manager hired to be dedicated to building and managing the Front of House operations for the venue. Reporting to the Managing Artistic Director, you will have the opportunity to create and implement a unique and welcoming patron experience. In partnership with the Box Office Manager you will build out a front of house team that puts an incredible audience experience at the forefront of our business. Candidates with experience as an Audience or Front of House Manager at a Performing Arts Center or rental venue and/or and with a particular passion for audience access are strongly encouraged to apply.
Reporting to the Managing Artistic Director, The Audience Services Manager oversees the front of house experience for the organization. The primary areas of responsibility include building out a new bar/concessions experience, providing outstanding customer service to patrons, managing and coordination with the Saints, and managing operations at the theater during events. The Audience Services Manager will lead a team of part time house managers and bartenders. The Audience Service Manager will be the anchor between the productions and the patrons. Customer service on both sides is crucial. You will be responsible for building the front of house reporting, checklists, training of part time staff and facilitating BASSET certification for part time staff when needed. The Audience Services Manager will also be responsible for management of concessions, maintaining stock of all concessions and managing weekly product runs/inventories and maintaining cash handling practices for front of house staff. If you are passionate about building high caliber audience experiences you will feel right at home. The ideal candidate is someone who is strategic, empathetic, innovative and a strong leader. Due to the multiplicity of performance artists that come through the venues a strong knowledge of theatre, dance and music is strongly preferred.
This is a full-time position with a salary range of $45,000 - $55,000 with employer paid benefits package. ABOUT Fine Arts Building - Built in 1885, Fine Arts Building was originally designed to house the carriage assembly and showroom for the Studebaker Company. Within a year, the company outgrew the space, paving the way for the building to become Chicago’s first fine arts colony, housing some of the most acclaimed artists with national and international impact on the arts. Fine Arts Building acknowledges its place on the traditional unceded homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations. Many other tribes such as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, and Fox also historically called this area home.
In 1898, Fine Arts Building created the historic Studebaker Theater, originally built to house vaudevillian performances, but later expanded into large productions in the 1920s. During subsequent years, performances by Bob Hope, Peter O’Toole, and Vincent Price graced the stage with their immense theatrical skills. Studebaker Theater continued throughout the years being known as one of the most important live theatrical venues in Chicago.In the 1970s, the city underwent a downturn in live theater attendance and the Studebaker was converted into four separate motion picture cinemas.
After extensive restorations began in 2015, Studebaker Theater reopened for live performances and now holds more than 600 seats. Restoration efforts are underway for the Studebaker's sister theater, the Playhouse, which is being designed as a theatrical event space. The Playhouse will be equipped to host productions as well as galas and events. With a projected capacity of 450, the Playhouse will provide a more intimate experience when it opens in 2022.
