Assistant Lighting and Video Supervisor

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) seeks a self-motivated and detail-oriented individual with strong communication and technical skills to join our lighting department. The Assistant Lighting & Video Supervisor is an integral full-time member of the production team, helping to oversee a robust season of up 12 productions per year comprising both produced and presented work. The Assistant Lighting & Video Supervisor is responsible for helping maintain the stage lighting and video systems in three venues at CST’s Navy Pier Campus: A 500-seat thrust space, 200-seat black box, and a flexible performance space seating up to 850. The Assistant Lighting & Video Supervisor will partner with top-level professional designers and directors from Chicago and around the world and will thrive in a fast-paced and highly collaborative work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Champion the organization’s commitment to a respectful, inclusive, and equitable workplace.
  • Model CST’s core values of service, ingenuity, and collaboration as well as its customer service ethos, and train and hold accountable front-facing staff for embodying these practices in all patron interactions.
  • In conjunction with the Lighting & Video Supervisor, serve as production electrician & production video supervisor for all CST Productions, including occasional touring and other off-campus productions.
  • Maintain the stage lighting & video systems and inventories for the 500-seat Courtyard Theater, the 200-seat Studio Theater and the 800 seat Yard Theater.
  • Collaborate with CST Facilities Management to maintain shared lighting, electrical, IT and video infrastructure.
  • Collaborate effectively with designers, CST staff and other stakeholders to achieve the creative vision for produced and presented work.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of overhire lighting & video crews for load-ins, notes, and strike calls.
  • In collaboration with other Production Department staff, design and implement special effects, atmospheric effects and other practical lighting devices and effects.
  • Install, program, and run lights for special events.
  • Program and at times run lighting and/or video playback for CST productions.
  • Install, configure, and focus video projectors and control systems.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of industry trends and best practices in the areas of stage lighting & video.


Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional theatrical lighting experience, preferably in a regional theater environment.
  • Proficient knowledge of ETC consoles, fixtures, dimmers and ETCNet protocols.
  • Familiarity with show control protocols including MSC and OSC.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory and practice, Vectorworks, Lightwright, Excel, moving lights, color scrollers, atmospheric devices, strobes, wireless dimming, LED technology, and other special effects equipment.
  • Familiarity with multi-display projection/video systems.
  • An understanding of rigging principles and practices as they relate to lighting equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices related to electricity and working at heights, including implementation of fall protection standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and effectively delegate.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful artistic collaboration with multiple departments and disciplines.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required.

Physical Demands

  • Perform a variety of physical tasks including but not limited to climbing, stooping, pushing, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and pulling.
  • Work at height in locations including but not limited to catwalks, grids, ladders, and genies.
  • Perform a variety of physical tasks while wearing safety equipment including body harness, hardhat, and safety glasses.
  • Push, pull, lift, and move up to 50 lbs. at times on a repetitive basis.
  • Use of manual dexterity in the operation of tools.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Hours and Compensation

Position is full time and is at times scheduled to work six days of work per week including nights, weekends, and occasional holidays. Hours and scheduling will vary and are subject to change based on the needs of each production or project. The position is hourly with benefits and will be covered under an IATSE Local 2 contract. Prior union membership is not a condition of employment.
