Assistant Costume Shop Manager

The Aurora Civic Center Authority (ACCA), an innovative organization located on Stolp Island in the Fox River in the heart of the richly diverse community of historic Aurora, Illinois (one hour from downtown Chicago), is seeking an Assistant Costume Shop Manager (Asst CSM). ACCA is the parent organization, which also includes a 501(c)3 arm under the name of Paramount Arts Centre, Inc. It operates three performance venues: the 6,000-person RiverEdge Park, the 1,843-seat landmark Paramount Theatre, and the 165-seat Copley Theatre. ACCA produces and presents over 300 performances each year, including star-studded touring productions and a self-produced Broadway Series of musicals for an annual audience of 350,000 patrons from over 250 communities. ACCA proudly operates the Paramount School of the Arts in the new John C. Dunham Aurora Arts Center, right next door to Paramount Theatre in downtown Aurora, and the company looks forward to producing a new, Bold Series of plays and musicals in the newly renovated Copley Theatre beginning in the 2022 season. Paramount Theatre also hosts free community events, $1 Classic Movie Mondays and its opulent interiors provide a spectacular backdrop for private functions such as wedding receptions or corporate galas. Across the street from Paramount Theatre are the gorgeous Meyer Ballrooms which play host to multiple wedding receptions and rental events throughout the year.

DEPARTMENT – Production

DIRECT REPORTING – This position reports to Costume Shop Manager (CSM)

WORKS CLOSELY WITH – Costume Shop Manager (CSM), Associate Costume Shop Manager (Associate CSM), Costume Designers, Drapers, First Hands, Costume Crafts Specialist, Stitchers, Wardrobe Crew, Directors, Stage Management, Production Department, Artistic Department, Finance and HR Department, and other Creative, Technical and Production Team Members

POSITION STATUS & SCHEDULE – Full time exempt; generally 8-9 hour days Monday-Friday; extended hours during tech; some weekends, nights and holidays

COMPENSATION – Annual salary range is $37,500-$45,000. Position also qualifies for an excellent benefits package including health insurance, paid time off, and 401k.

POSITION SUMMARY – Assistant Costume Shop Manager will assist CSM in establishing and executing Costume Shop operations. Assistant Costume Shop Manager will also work with CSM, Designers, Associate CSM, Stage Management, Costume Shop crew, Costume Crafts Specialist and Wardrobe crew in the realization of the costume design from conception to implementation for productions presented and produced in all venues operated by Aurora Civic Center Authority with an initial emphasis on the Bold Series (Bold) and future programming for Stolp Island Theatre (SIT) and summer Disney productions.

 Manage all incoming shipments and returns for the Costume Department for all ACCA productions.

 Meet with the CSM, Designer, Associate CSM and costume shop crew to review the progress of the builds as often as necessary and assist in determining weekly production work goals for Costume Shop.

 Read and become thoroughly familiar with the scripts for upcoming ACCA productions.

 Complete research as needed to support costume designer’s needs for Bold, SIT and summer Disney productions.

 Work with CSM to review Character Scene Breakdowns from directors and/or designers to identify and resolve any related challenges for Bold, SIT and summer Disney productions.

 Attend and participate in design meetings, designer runs, and tech for Bold, SIT and summer Disney productions.

 Schedule appointments for acquisition of measurements and fittings for Bold, SIT and summer Disney productions.

 Prepare all costume pieces prior to fittings, including, but not limited to, tagging incoming pieces, arranging by character, and setting and resetting fitting rooms. Assistant Costume Shop Manager will be responsible to pull any additional pieces needed by CSM, Associate CSM or designer during the fittings for all ACCA productions.

 Read all Daily Calls and Reports and execute report requests for Bold, SIT and summer Disney productions (i.e. pull and provide knee pads, rehearsal skirts, etc).

 Work with CSM to track and verify completion of designer notes for Bold, SIT and summer Disney productions.

 Participate in shopping trips as requested to acquire materials and pieces needed for designs for all productions with a special emphasis on Bold, SIT and summer Disney productions.

 Prior to First Tech, complete and post individual Dressing Lists at each performer’s assigned dressing station for all ACCA productions.

 Throughout tech, assist CSM and Associate CSM with daily requirements as need during the tech processes for all productions with a special emphasis on Bold, SIT and summer Disney productions.

 During preview process, update/finalize Dressing Lists, including understudy items; update as needed at dressing stations for all ACCA productions.

 Assist with coordination and supply of costumes for covers slated to appear in understudy and/or swing tracks for all ACCA productions.

 Create and maintain a production archive, including a piece list for each production to facilitate the organizational needs of the costume shop and other departments for all ACCA productions.

 Work with CSM and Associate CSM to coordinate and/or execute drop-off and pick-up of the dry cleaning during performance runs for all ACCA productions.

 Work with CSM and Associate CSM to manage and maintain an organized, clean, optimally functioning, safe work environment for all costume work spaces.

 Work with CSM and Associate CSM to manage costume inventory, maintenance and storage.

 Assist shop technicians on costume construction as needed.

 Additional duties as assigned by CSM, Designer, Associate CSM, Production Manager, or member(s) of senior staff.

 3 years’ professional costume experience.

 Demonstrated proficiency in costume design, construction, and costume/wardrobe coordination.  Knowledge of industrial and domestic sewing machines and other costume shop equipment.

 Excellent written and verbal communication; organizational, budgetary and time management skills.

 Capacity to maintain good humor in stressful times and approach challenges in a calm, creative, diplomatic manner.

 Keen ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment.

 Current knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

 Ability to occasionally work long hours and manage an irregular schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.
