Adjunct Lecturer in 4D/New Media foundations

The School of Art + Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a part-time Adjunct Lecturer in the area of New Media for a teaching-focused appointment beginning August 16, 2019. This appointment requires service for one nine-month academic year. This appointment may be renewed at the School’s discretion.

This Specialized Faculty position is responsible for delivering studio courses that fulfill the 4D requirement of the School’s first-year curriculum. These courses introduce all Art and Design students to concepts and tools central to the production of time-based and digitally mediated art and design, including video, sound, digital image making, interactive and computational media. It is expected that this Adjunct Lecturer would work with program faculty and established core knowledge requirements, while utilizing their own expertise and experience in revising existing syllabi.


Terminal degree in studio art, new media, or related field; experience working with video, audio, and digital image making as tools for art making. Experience teaching time-based media to undergraduate students is required. 3 years of teaching experience in higher education beyond a teaching assistant position is preferred. Candidate should have working knowledge of histories and theories of time-based art and media (including some combination of contemporary art, cinema, new media, design, sound art, music). Candidate should possess a demonstrated record of professional accomplishments and be in dialogue with contemporary discourse, particularly as it relates to practice or pedagogy. An excellent working knowledge of appropriate software is required.


Teaching will include time-based arts (including video, animation and performance), image making in digital environments where cameras are not the primary means of production, and the aesthetics of interactive media (including markup, code, and narrative prototyping).
