Effective Exhibition Proposals

Artists often need to submit proposals to galleries for solo exhibitions. Learn how to present yourself and your work successfully in a standard proposal format. Topics covered will include project statements and artist statements, artist bios, and choosing the best visuals.

This workshop is ideal for emerging and mid-career artists, recent graduates, and new practitioners planning to submit proposals in the near future or looking to learn more about working with exhibition spaces. Attention will also be given to adapting proposals for residency and grant applications. The focus will be on developing a cohesive project statement and choosing images that best support your proposal.

Rooted in our core values of knowledge-sharing and building community, this 90-minute seminar will include 30 minutes of conversation with participants. Bring your experience and your questions to the group!

Jennifer Murray is an artist, educator, and curator who lives and works in Chicago. Her work and research investigate human material culture, and the impact that objects and collecting has on contemporary life. In addition to her photography-based creative work, her professional practice includes working as a curator, writer, and cultural producer. She is the Museum Manager at 21c Museum Hotel Chicago and was previously the executive director of Filter Photo for eight years. She was Director of Averill and Bernard Leviton A+D Gallery at Columbia College Chicago for eleven years, organizing a broad range of exhibitions in art and design. Additionally, Murray is an independent curator and writer and was a featured Director/Curator in Newcity Magazine's Art 50: Chicago's Visual Vanguard 2024.
