Wilderness Artist Residency
Visitor Center Artist Camp is an Artist Residency in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, nestled between rural townships, abandoned mines, and the vast Ottawa National Forest.
We camp in tents, and work in hand-built timber-framed barns. We explore creative practices influenced by the surrounding natural environment, and focus on sustainability and self-sufficiency while living and working communally in this beautiful Northwoods wilderness.
2021 Residency : JULY 21st - AUGUST 7th
Take the Local Clay Workshop to immerse yourself in your process and your environment. Hand-harvest the local clay for sculpture and pottery, and fire with a variety of traditional and experimental techniques.
Take the Woodcrafts Workshop to learn traditional timber-framing, wood-turning, or furniture-making techniques from local masters and craftspeople, and mill your own rough-cut lumber on a Mac truck sawmill.
OR, Propose an Independent Project that can be supported by our wilderness setting, environmental focus, and adventurous attitude.
Previous years’ artists have created site-specific installations and large-scale land art, choreographed performances, photographed the area’s historic mining towns, and drawn and painted images inspired by the gorgeous landscape.
From the casual craftsperson or nature-lover looking for a creative retreat away from the noise of the city, to the emerging artist looking to learn new skills and make connections, or the advanced artist looking to step out of their normal routine and experiment with new materials and techniques, the VCAC is a unique opportunity to step back from busy daily life and connect deeply with your materials, your process, and your environment.
Space is limited! We have space for 12 residents in 2021. Rolling Applications - reviewed in order received, until all spaces are filled. Final Deadline June 15th. Acceptance announcements sent within one week of each submission.
You must be at least 21 years of age to attend. Adults of all creative backgrounds, experience levels, and fields of practice are encouraged to apply.
